The 2025-26 NHL season has been rough for the Edmonton Oilers, who have had plenty of ups and downs throughout the regular season, so far. They currently sit firmly in third place inside the weak Pacific Division but if they were part of any other division within the league, they would be barely hanging onto a wildcard position in the West.
There have been stretches this year where the Oilers have been out of a playoff spot and many more where they are not playing like a team that deserves a playoff berth. Their current losing streak is a good example where they have been severely outplayed and outscored by both the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, losing 4-0 and 5-2 respectively.
There is plenty of blame to go around but the Oilers' biggest stars have been relatively consistent in their messaging, as Leon Draisaitl said before the Olympic break that the blame "starts with the coaches". Those harsh comments likely led to some serious shakeups behind the bench for the Oilers and the latest comments by Oilers star and captain Connor McDavid are arguably just as damning.
McDavid in awe of Jon Cooper and Tampa Bay Lightning
After the Oilers dropped their second straight game against the Lightning on Saturday, McDvaid heaped praise onto his opponents. After losing 5-2, McDavid when asked about the Lightning said "They’re extremely well coached they’re extremely well organized. They’re very very rehearsed in everything that they do. It’s very impressive and when you do break them down, they got a heck of a goalie to back stop them." According to Oilers TSN beat reporter, Ryan Rishaug on X (formerly Twitter).

“They got a great system. They’re perfectly coached. They all know what they’re doing all over the ice. It’s impressive. They are a great team.”
“They’re extremely well coached they’re extremely well organized. They’re very very rehearsed in…
Then, when he was asked by Rishaug how the Oilers can get their system to that place "That’s a coaching question you can ask Knobber that question. Obviously we’ve been play together a long time and we feel like we’re somewhat rehearsed and organized, but not to their level.”
Although subtle, it is clearly a backhanded comment about the coaching differences between the Oilers and the two-time Stanley Cup champions. At least, that is what it appears to be.
I have no doubt that McDavid would not intentionally degrade his coach to the media, it cannot be ignored that both of the Oilers biggest stars have made negative remarks about how they are coached as a team.
Kris Knoblauch deserves blame
There is no hiding that this season has not gone how anybody would have hoped. If the Oilers fail to go far in the playoffs, it seems likely that there will be a change behind the bench for the Oilers, most likely resulting in the club firing Kris Knoblauch.
There have been plenty of critiques of Knoblauch and how he has played this team. Although he cannot do anything about his goaltending, it is clear that the Oilers tactics and deployment have faced harsh criticism and deservedly so.
Especially with the way that Knoblauch has deployed his rookies and young players, it is more than worthy of criticism.
