The Edmonton Oilers are going to have a significantly different look in the upcoming season. They'll have a new face as head coach, with that decision potentially being finalized next week, a different goaltending tandem, and a fair amount of movement amongst their skating lineup as well. Darnell Nurse is unlikely to return on the blueline, and more than one of the Oilers forwards intends to try free agency.

The summer should see trades and signings, but if the stars align, a prospect might push their way into the lineup, including Quinn Hutson. He was a Top 5 scorer in the NCAA before signing with Edmonton, and his first full season with the Oilers' Bakersfield Condors was a good one. Hutson was second on the Condors in scoring, with 30 goals and 33 assists, and he also made an impact in the Condors' short playoff run, with three more goals in the three games he played.

Small but positive NHL sample size

Hutson has only played a few games at the National Hockey League level. He saw action in two late season matches in 2024-25, and twice that number this past season. He managed his first NHL goal in a late December game, a game winner, and his Goals For and Expected Goals For were respectable. It's an incredibly small sample size, as Hutson only averaged 8 minutes of playing time per game, but it's promising all the same.

Quinn's Montreal Canadiens' brother, Lane Hutson, is already a star, and Cole Hutson is a highly touted prospect of the Washington Capitals, so the genetic potential seems to exist. Quinn is the eldest of the three Hutson brothers and has excelled at every other level, but the leap to the biggest league is more challenging than any he's faced before now.

His NHL Edge stats suggest he might lack the high end speed burst that most truly elite NHL scorers possess, but he plays with a quickness that may balance out top speed, and his shot is dangerously accurate. The 30 goals on 199 shots works out to a 15% shooting accuracy. If that percentage were to carry over to the NHL, it would have been Top 20.

Hutson isn't yet a complete player, or at least he wasn't doing enough to catch and keep Kris Knoblauch's attention in his few appearances in 2025-26, but if he can keep the defensive side of his game where it needs to be, while offering the Oilers some depth scoring, and maybe even a more potent second powerplay, his future could be bright, and that would be a net positive for the Oilers.
