One piece of history could be a positive sign for Oilers' Stanley Cup hopes

It's admittedly a reach, but the Oilers entered the history books after game 4 versus the Panthers by setting a record which could allude to winning the cup.

Even the most optimistic of fans acknowledge, understand and appreciate the size of the task facing the Edmonton Oilers. To come back and win the Stanley Cup would be straight out of the world of fantasy, instantly becoming the best miracle on ice since a certain game back in 1980.

Only four times in NHL history, has a team recovered from a three-game deficit in the playoffs to win a series. And only once did it happen in the Stanley Cup Final, all the way back in 1942 when the Toronto Maple Leafs came back to beat the Detroit Red Wings in stunning fashion.

Interestingly though, that series between the Leafs and Red Wings might actually provide some specific impetus for the Oilers to come back in this year's Stanley Cup Final. That's because, as per Preston Hodgkinson of the Daily Hive, the Oilers have an eerie thing in common with the 1942 edition of the Leafs.

A record-setting win in game 4 for the Oilers

The only reason this Stanley Cup Final series is even still alive, is because the Oilers finally woke up and showed the hockey world exactly how dangerous they can be on Saturday night in game four. As a resulted, they dismantled and humiliated the Panthers 8-1.

In the process, the Oilers also entered the NHL history books. As per Sportsnet, their 8-1 win set a new record for the largest margin of victory by a team facing elimination in the Stanley Cup Final.

The relevance of this is that the previous record was held by the Leafs, with a 9-3 win in game five of their 1942 Stanley Cup Final versus the Red Wings. Admittedly this is one heck of a reach, but maybe ... just maybe ... this can prove to be a good omen for the Oilers and their chances of coming back and grabbing the Holy Grail.

We've already written about how on their day, no one in the NHL is better than the Oilers. That if there is anyone capable of coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win it all, it's the team which this season came within one win of the all-time record of 17 consecutive victories. (The Pittsburgh Penguins in 1993.)

Let's be clear in stressing that the Panthers will still likely go on to win the Stanley Cup, thanks in part to the Oilers making fair too many needless mistakes. However, until it's officially over the Oilers and their fans will remain hopeful, even if it means reaching to find positive parallels with the only other team to ever come back from a three-game deficit to take home Lord Stanley's Cup.
