This is a golden era for the NHL with a plethora of great centres, including the likes of Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Aleksander Barkov, Jack Eichel, Jack Hughes and the Oilers' Leon Draisaitl. Oh, and on the subject of the Oilers, a certain Connor McDavid.

McDavid is often called the best centre -- and indeed player -- in the game today. And if there was any doubt, he removed it with his performances during last season's playoffs, when he fell just one win short of the Stanley Cup and took home the Conn Smythe Trophy.

With this in mind, if anyone is qualified to give their opinion on a player, it's number 97. And McDavid was faced with such a situation this week in Las Vegas, where players gathered for the NHL North American Media Tour.

McDavid asked about Matthews

The player in question who the five-time Art Ross Trophy winner was asked about, was Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews. However, if anyone was hoping that McDavid was going to say anything negative or derogatory about his fellow former first overall draft pick, they were sadly mistaken.

Instead, the Oilers superstar was full of praise for Matthews. As per Sportsnet, he said: "He's an amazing player, great player, but he's a great person, highly intelligent, loves the game, loves the Leafs. I think he's a great captain."

Last month, Matthews was named as the 26th captain in Leafs history, and the first to be born in the United States. There is undoubtedly a lot of pressure that comes with holding such an esteemed position, even more so now, as the Leafs look to end the longest Stanley Cup drought in NHL history, dating all the way back to 1967.

However, McDavid has no doubt the seven-time NHL All-Star has what it takes to succeed, in part due to his personality. He said: "He's definitely got a little bit more style than maybe I do, and Toronto's a stylish city. I think he represents the city great and the team."

Given the talent on the Oilers and Leafs, it would be a dream matchup to see the two teams face off in this coming season's Stanley Cup Final. (Well, at least for Canadian media and fans.) And you know the clash between their two superstar centres would make most of the headlines - just don't expect McDavid to trash talk or berate his rival in any way if the matchup does come to fruition.
