Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch revealed some big lineup decisions before Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils.

In a press scrum ahead of the game he revealed that goaltender Calvin Pickard would take the start over netminder Stuart Skinner. Skinner had a big shutout victory against the New York Rangers earlier in the week but struggled against the New York Islanders.

He also revealed that they were replacing rookie forward Ike Howard in the lineup with forward Curtis Lazar. Knoblauch stated that he was looking to add "A little more grit, a little more defensively responsible play." by putting Lazar in the lineup.

He also revealed that Jake Walman would not make his season debut in this game. He has yet to play since signing his contract extension earlier this month and remains out but hopeful for the near future.

Howard and depth have struggled to start the year

The Oilers acquired the 2025 Hobey Baker award winner from the Tampa Bay Lightning over the summer in what many considered a steal. Heading into the season he was ranked No. 2 on our top 10 prospects list but also 19th on the NHL network's top 25 prospects list.

However, he has struggled in the early goings of the season, playing just over nine minutes per game on the fourth line. Unsurprisingly, he has failed to produce a single point in his limited usage, only registering four total shots on goal.

The reasoning behind the roster decision is unclear aside from Knoblauch's comments regarding Lazar's style of play and what he brings. Some coaches use it as a motivational tactic to scratch young players but many disagree with this sentiment, saying playing time is better than sitting in the press box.

There is no question that the 21 year old has struggled to produce so far but given his deployment and usage, it is not the most advantageous position. Especially for a young player whose bread and butter is his offensive abilities.

He is not alone, as the Oilers depth in general has struggled to score and is a big reason why the team is currently on the outside looking in at a playoff position.
