In what is becoming one of the biggest days in recent franchise history, the Edmonton Oilers lock up another big piece of their future core. The club signed 2025 Trade Deadline acquisition, left-handed defenceman Jake Walman to a new contract.
Like McDavid, he has been eligible to sign a new deal since July 1st and it has been heavily rumoured and reported on. In September, multiple insiders reported that the Walman extension was going to come in on a long term contract, with the speculation being a roughly six-year deal, carrying a $6 million annual average value (AAV).
However, now that it is being reported by Sportsnet's NHL insider Elliotte Friedman as a done deal but the terms are different. On X, Friedman said
This is not the only piece of business Edmonton is doing today

Hearing the Oilers are also closing in on a 7x7M extension with the Pride of Armour Heights, Jake Walman
Big day for them
If the report is true -- which it likely is -- Walman will come in as the third-highest paid Oilers blueliner at seven years and $7 million.
After the Oilers acquired him at the deadline, Walman scored eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 15 regular season games. In the playoffs he added two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 22 games.
In his brief time with the Oilers, Walman showed he fit in well on the backend and in a variety of roles. This makes the club's long term and large monetary commitment, make sense for both himself and the team going forward.
He projects to play a major role in the team's top-four this upcoming season and in the future.
