Oilers extend Connor McDavid to a major hometown discount on two-year deal

The Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid officially agreed to a two-year contract extension

Fans of the Edmonton Oilers can finally rejoice as the club and their captain Connor McDavid have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension.

It was heavily reported leading up to the day that the McDavid extension was imminent. Especially with National Hockey League (NHL) and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reporting on his latest 32 Thoughts: The Podcast episode that he would give the Oilers 'clarity' in the next day or two on his contract situation.

Friedman stated “Reading the tea leaves here, I do think that McDavid wants to give the Oilers clarity before the season begins by either signing or explaining why specifically he wouldn’t sign."

Now that he has signed, he does give the Oilers and their fans some much needed clarity. Shortly after the podcast episode dropped this morning, it became clear that the Oilers and McDavid were going to come to terms on a contract very soon.

Now that we have the details; Two-years with a $12.5 million annual average value (AAV) it is clear that McDavid wants to remain with the Oilers for at least the next three seasons. This contract is the same AAV as his previous deal which helps to give the Oilers some much needed cap relief while also allowing them to easily project outward and fit everybody in.

This is a major hometown discount, one that McDavid surely hopes will pay off with the most illustrious prize in hockey, the Stanley Cup.
