Kicking off the Oilers top 10 prospects list following the honourable mentions. The eldest brother in one of the National Hockey League's next generation of brothers, 24 year old winger Quinn Hutson is set to battle for a spot in the Edmonton Oilers lineup over the next few weeks.
Hutson is the older brother to young defencemen; Lane Hutson and Cole Hutson, both high draft picks for the Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals, respectively. Lane of course, captured the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2025 as the NHL's rookie of the year.
Quinn was signed by the Oilers near the end of the 2024-25 season, wrapping up a successful NCAA career that saw him record 114 points (56 goals and 58 assists) in 117 games with the Boston University Terriers. At his peak in 2024-25, he reached 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 38 games and finished that season as a Hockey East All-Star.
Since being signed by the Oilers, Hutson has spent most of his time with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors with just six total games in an Oilers uniform, scoring one goal in that time. He played 67 games last season for the Condors, scoring 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists).
Hutson's future
The Oilers 2026-27 training camp kicks off soon and the Oilers have a few spots available in the bottom-six and periphery of the roster. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman even listed Hutson by name as a player who they expect to fight for an NHL role over the next few weeks.
Following Hutson's two-year entry level contract expiring, he signed a two-year extension very early, in January 2026. This signals that both parties are satisfied with having Hutson around the organization and that the team seems to have some belief in his abilities to make the club at some point.
He is a scoring player who is smaller statured at just 5'11 and 176lbs. It seems likely that Hutson remains in the Oilers organization for the immediate future and tries to make the NHL squad or proves himself as an AHL call-up option, as he did last season, playing four games with the Oilers. Interestingly, he showed quite a bit of chemistry with Oilers winger, Isaac Howard, who had an extended stint with the Condors last season.
NHL potential
As of right now, given how his career has went so far, the most likely scenario is that Hutson becomes either a depth scoring winger, playing primarily on the third line as a secondary or tertiary offensive piece. He has shown the ability to produce at every level he has played at, scoring at an above point-per-game level at both the USHL and NCAA, and now the AHL with a near point-per-game showing.
Hutson's ceiling is a secondary offensive piece with the potential to play in a third line role but would most likely be a 13th forward. If he can however carve out a role on the main club, expect him to be utilized as a depth forward.
Especially with young forward Matt Savoie out with injury to start the season, it makes his chances of maikg the Oilers' opening night roster even better. Over the long term, Hutson is expected to fight to get into an NHL lineup, whether that be with the Oilers or another club. For now, he should remain focused on the task at home and wish him best of luck.
