The 2026-27 NHL regular season is set to begin in nearly a month and the Edmonton Oilers came out with a concerning injury related press release.

In the press release the Oilers revealed that four players would miss the Oilers training camp set to take place next month in preperation for next season. Those players being; forwards Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark, along with defenceman Alec Regula and goaltender Frederik Andersen.
In their statement the team provided further context stating; "Both Mattias Janmark and Alec Regula continue to recover from medical procedures performed last season and shortly after the season concluded, respectively, while Matt Savoie and Frederik Andersen are currently rehabilitating injuries which occurred during off-season training sessions."
Oilers reporter for TSN Ryan Rishaug provided further context on X (formerly Twitter) saying "Sounds like Savoie and Andersen will be available late October or so." This makes the news even more concerning as both players were expected to be big parts of the Oilers' plans.
Oilers injury issues continue
Like last year, the Oilers injury troubles seem to be continuing. Last season, the Oilers started with Zach Hyman out long term with other impact players such as; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, and Jake Walman missing significant time.
This year, entering the season with Savoie who worked his way into a top line role and ended last season on an incredibly pace scoring 19 points in his final 24 games on the injured list will sting. As well, the newly acquired goalie Andersen who was expected to help stabilize their crease could be cause for concern but also presents an opportunity to Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi to take the reigns in goal.
Regula being injured is something that hurts his chances at securing a spot on the Oilers crowded blueline. The 26 year old right-shot defenceman played 29 games with Edmonton last season and being able to showcase his abilites could have made the difference between a seventh defenceman role and a likely AHL assignment. Now, he likely finds himself in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors when he returns from injury, at least to start the year.
The Janmark announcement was kind of expected with how his season ended last year. The 33 year old Swedish forward played just 43 games for the Oilers last season and has found himself primarily in a depth role in his time with the club. He could be nearing the end of his NHL career as he enters the final season of his current three-year contract, carrying a $1.45 million AAV.
Overall, the injury timelines do not appear to be detrimental and even though it may put a slight damper on how quickly players like Savoie or Andersen can get up to speed, the club has enough depth to fill in for these players. If not, the team has way worse problems to deal with than man games lost due to injury.
