The Edmonton Oilers announced their annual rookie camp roster on Tuesday with many predictable but exciting names set to attend. In total, there are 14 forwards, seven defencemen, and four goaltenders invited for a total of 25 players and seven being free agent camp invitees.

The camp is set to begin on Wednesday for medical testing at Rogers Place in Edmonton and then the there will be on-ice practices on both Thursday, September 11th and Saturday, September 13th.

The team will face-off in a classic rivalry matchup with the Battle of Alberta against the Calgary Flames at home on Friday, September 12th and then in Calgary against the Flames on Sunday, September 14th.

The camp will wrap-up on Monday September, 15th with the final day of on-ice activities.

Oilers camp roster

The roster is filled with a lot of players that you expect with notable names like potential calder candidate; Matt Savoie. There is also Beau Akey, and newly acquired top prospect Ike Howard. There are also big free agent signings with Josh Samanski, Viljami Marjala, and Damien Carfagna set to attend.

The list also includes recent NHLPA rookie showcase attendee and NCAA free agent signing, forward Quinn Hutson.

We all know the big names but there are a number of intriguing camp invites. They are:

Andrew O'Neill

O'Neill is an 18 year old 6'2 194lbs right-handed two-way centre who plays a high energy and relentless attacking style of play. He is set to play with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this year before joining the University of North Dakota in the NCAA next year. He likely projects as more of a bottom-six piece at the next level but his game screams translatability, a trait that the Oilers seem to covet.

Rhett Pitlick

Pitlick is a diminutive winger who after four years in the NCAA as a standout product signed a minor league contract with the Oilers American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. He is set to join his brother Rem there this year and although does not boast the most translatable game, he is a highly productive player who has been able to rack up points everywhere he has went so far.

Jaxen Adam

The Cochrane, Alberta native, Adam is a towering defenceman at 6'4 217lbs. In recent years the NHL has seen a trend towards teams coveting big bodied defenders. He shows a knack for throwing pucks on goal from the blueline and has some solid feet for a player of his stature. He still has a way to go but as an undrafted free agent invitee, he is a good player to give an opportunity to.

Hyde Davidson

The 19 year old Davidson is an average sized defender (6'2 172lbs) from Edmonton, Alberta. He has spent the past three seasons playing in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds, typically playing lower down the lineup. He is a possible under-the-radar add and could be a good find for the Oilers and will have the time to prove himself.

Dru Krebs

Krebs is a 22 year old left-handed defenceman from Okotoks, Alberta who played last year with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL and a two game cup of coffee with the Ontario Reign in the AHL. He has shown some solid two-way abilities as a member of the Medicine Hat Tigers and now under a minor league contract, he will get a chance to play with other Oilers rookies.

Parker Von Richter

The 19 year old Mississauga native has spent the past three seasons playing with the Mississauga (now, Brampton) Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League. He is a right-handed defender and has been a steady force on the backend for the Steelheads, showcasing good defensive habits with the capability to chip in secondary offence. He will likely return to the OHL this season but has a chance to put himself on the radar for the Oilers brass.

Carson Woodall

Playing with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL the past two seasons, Woodall has been a big piece to their backend. He is a good skater with some two-abilities and has shown growth offensively year-over-year. He is a 19 year old who like Von Richter, likely returns to the OHL but with the ability to prove he can standout amongst bonafide NHL prospects.

Josh Banini

The only free agent invite goalie, Banini is a 19 year old local product who spent last season backstopping the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL. Despite a poor record of 3-17-1 he posted respectable save percentage at .899, indicating that his win/loss record may be deceiving. He is below average in terms of his size given modern NHL standards (6'0, 194lbs) which could work against him but if he can prove his worth, it should not stop him altogether.

The Oilers have made strides to improve their prospect pool and the quality of this roster is evident with some truly high end names on this list. Many who could make the teams opening night roster and who will be impact players down the line.
