The Edmonton Oilers made their biggest wave in the NHL news cycle on Thursday by announcing that they have agreed to terms on a contract extension with goaltending prospect Connor Ungar. The Oilers signed Ungar to a one-year, two-way contract carrying an annual average value of $850,000.

The 24 year old goaltender was signed by the Oilers in 2024 after a successful season in USports playing for Brock University Badgers capturing both rookie and goaltender of the year awards. He has quickly rose the ranks within the organization over the past two seasons and seems poised to become the club's third string option for next year, with the possibility of NHL games.

Ungar is arguably Oilers best goalie prospect

Despite the overall weakness of the Oilers prospect pool, their goaltending depth chart is quite strong. Ungar is arguably the best and having spent the past two seasons in the ECHL and American Hockey League (AHL) with the Bakersfield Condors.

In his rookie year with the Fort Wayne Komets, Ungar played 35 games with a 19-12-4 record and a 2.74 goals against average and .903 save percentage, recording three shutouts. This past season, he took a big step, playing with three ECHL clubs; The Komets, Greensboro Gargoyles, and Orlando Solar Bears and was called up to the Condors to make his AHL debut.

In the ECHL this season Ungar played with the Komets again for two games, sporting a 1.44 GAA and .944 save percentage. He also played four games with a 1.42 GAA and 9.45 save percentage with the Gargoyles. For the Solar Bears, Ungar played 19 games with a 2.66 GAA and .913 save percentage. He was called up to play with the Condors, making 13 appearances total with a 2.51 GAA and a .923 save percentage.

The Oilers also have 22 year old Swedish netminder Samuel Jonsson in their system who made his North American debut this season playing with the Komets. As well, 21 year old Nathaniel Day who played his first full professional season also with the Komets.

In addition to them, the Oilers have two goaltenders developing in Finland with Eemil Vinni and Daniel Salonen. Both of them seem most likely to stay there for at least one more season with Vinni playing in the Mestis and Salonen just completing his first full year in the Liiga.

Ungar is older and seems to be further along in his career at this point, likely to take over a more permanent role with the Condors this season. He also seems to be one goalie that could see the NHL in the very near future.
