The leaguewide perception of the Edmonton Oilers prospect pool is that it is not very strong, lacking high end impact pieces and strong depth.

Although this may be true, there are plenty of players throughout their pool that had strong seasons in 2025-26 amongst their respective leagues. Roby Jarventie, who has battled injuries this past season played a mostly healthy campaign scoring 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) through 61 games with the Oilers American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. He even made his Oilers debut and got a three game cup of coffee with the club.

Despite not blowing the doors off with his scoring, Jarventie was able to finally put together a healthy season but is set to leave the Oilers organization to play in the Swiss National League next season for HC Ambri-Piotta. He will likely remain on the Oilers reserve list moving forward, if the club chooses to keep them this summer when his deal expires.

Oilers prospects who took the next step

Aside from Jarventie, there are a number of others who stood out and were able to raise their stocks through their strong play.

Tommy Lafreniere

The Oilers first selection at the 2025 NHL Draft was used on Kamloops Blazers centre, Tommy Lafreniere. The 19 year old had a much higher offensive output this season going from 56 points (24 goals, 32 assists) in 68 games in his draft year to 77 points (41 goals, 36 assists) in 67 games this past year.

This shows a strong step forward and of course shows that Lafreniere has improved his shot, scoring nearly 20 more goals in one less game. Lafreniere even got a late season showing with the Condors and showed some promise in five regular seasons and three playoff games. Lafreniere plays a projectable style and looks like he could become a competent third line centre at the NHL level, which would soften the blow about the Oilers losing a certain prospect.

Viljami Marjala

The Oilers signed 23 year old Finnish scoring forward, Viljami Marjala to an entry level contract last season. These are always gambles, but especially when it is a player whose seen as an all-offence forward out of Europe. However, Marjala was able to silence many critics with his play down in Bakersfield this season.

Playing in his first North American pro season, Marjala scored 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists) in 72 games this past season. He ranked third amongst the team in scoring, showcasing his offensive vision and creativity with fast hands and feet. He looked like he could be a depth scorer for the Oilers as early as next season, something the team will need.

Samuel Jonsson

Speaking of players in their North American professional rookie season, Swedish netminder Samuel Jonsson spent the past season with the Oilers ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets. The 22 year old was selected by the Oilers in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

He played in 33 regular season games with a 21-8-2 record and a 2.38 goals against average and .910 save percentage. He added another 10 starts in the playoffs with a 6-3-1 record and an improved 2.31 GAA and .925 save percentage.

At 6'5, Jonsson has modern NHL size and takes up so much of the net. His play over the past two seasons, first in the Hockey Allsvenskan and now the ECHL have catapulted him up the depth chart to a legitimate NHL goalie prospect.

Connor Ungar

Connor Ungar is another goaltender that stole the show this season within the Oilers organization. The 24 year old USports standout, Ungar has really made a name for himself since the Oilers signed him out of Brock University in 2024.

He spent this year bouncing from team-to-team playing with the Condors in the AHL as well as the Greensboro Gargoyles, Orlando Solar Bears, and the Komets in the ECHL. He played 13 games with the Condors, backstopping them to a 9-2-2 record and a 2.51 GAA and .923 save percentage. He played in 25 games in the ECHL, compiling an 11-9-4 record with a 2.33 GAA and .920 save percentage.

Ungar is an interesting prospect within the Oilers system, having dominated at every level so far but has yet to play an NHL game. For a team that had very poor goaltending in 2025-26, it seems silly to completely rule out Ungar going on a Jordan Binnington type of run barring the club making a big move in goal.
