The Edmonton Oilers somehow came out of this game alive. After a wild comeback loss, losing 6-5 in overtime in their first game of the 2026-27 season, at home against the Vancouver Canucks, their Pacific Division rivals chose to give them a taste of their own medicine.
The Oilers rallied early, going up 5-0 by the early second period before giving up their first goal. The two teams traded chances throughout the second and the game went into the second intermission with an 8-3 score.
It got close off an Elias Pettersson goal to put them within two with an 8-6 score midway through the final frame. However, both teams got one more and the game ended with the Oilers holding out to win the game 9-7 in regulation.
It was a wild game with plenty of interesting stories.
Multiple Oilers break records
Evan Bouchard notched three points in this outing and continues his unreal start to the season, recording eight points through the first two games of the season. He broke the record for most points by a defenceman through the first two games, a record previously held by Harry Cameron since the 1917-18 season.

Bouchard collects his 8th point of the season, setting the NHL record https://t.co/fU8hKHCfls
This was a great follow-up game to last one that saw him record a hat trick, only the third time a defender has done that in the season opener in NHL history. The previous two were Mark Howe in 1980 and Bert Corbeau in 1919.
In addition to Bouchard's record setting game, Oilers goaltender Devon Levi had quite the eventful game himself. He let in seven goals, setting a franchise record for the most in an Oilers road victory. Also, according to X (formerly Twitter) user Brian Swane, Levi's .682 save percentage is the lowest for an Oilers goalie in a recorded win.

On a more positive note, Oilers rookie and NCAA free agent signing Owen Michaels scored his first NHL career goal. It was a nice goal off a feed from Mathieu Joseph from behind the goal line to a wide open Michaels in the slot to shoot it in.
It may not have been the type of game either side wanted, it was an exciting contest that featured 16 goals in total. There was never a dull moment.
Who takes the crease next?
After last game, it seemed easy to pass the net off to Levi after Tristan Jarry put together an abysmal performance. He posted a 5.85 goals against average and a .739 save percentage in the 6-5 overtime loss, ending the night with 17 saves off 23 shots.
However, now Levi has had an arguably worse game posting a 7.02 GAA and .682 save percetage in the victory, stopping just 15 of the 22 shots he faced.
Next game, it could conceivably go either way with both Jarry and Levi being just as (un)deserving of the starter's crease.
The Oilers have a lot of work to do as they prepare for their next outing. Hopefully the injury bug becomes a lot kinder to them moving forward.
