Just under a week ago, there was a less than encouraging update in respect of winger Viktor Arvidsson. As we wrote at the time, Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch admitted there was no timeline for when he would return to playing.
Knoblauch added that Arvidsson wasn't healing quite as expected despite rest. This was in stark contrast to when the offseason addition was first injured, with the projection that it was a minor issue which was being treated as just day-to-day.
A positive update
Well, another update was provided on Monday, and Oilers fans will be delighted to know it was more encouraging than the previous one. As per Jim Parsons of NHL Trade Talk, Knoblauch said:
"(Arvidsson's) been skating, feeling better, and not going to play immediately. We’re hoping that he’s back practising with the team this week."
Now yes, we appreciate there's still a certain amount of ambiguity in respect of the injury. For a start, the Oilers 'hope' Avidsson will be back practising this week, which of course means there are no guarantees.
Even after this, there is still the question of when the 31-year-old will actually be back playing in an actual game? However, as noted, this latest news is at least a step in the right direction.
Still more questions to answer
Of course, when Arvidsson does return to playing, this will lead to other questions. Can he remain healthy and will his form improve after a subpar start to the 2024-25 regular season with his new team.?
As much as there were plenty of positive vibes about the signing of the 2014 fourth round draft pick, it did not come without concern. He has endured durability issues throughout his 10+ years in the NHL, including being limited to just 18 games last season due to a back injury.
In respect of Arvidsson's production, he was limited to five points in 16 games this season for the Oilers prior to his latest (undisclosed) injury. For a player who averages around 40 points per season usually, this is not good enough.
In defence of the Sweden native, it should be noted that plenty of players suffered through underwhelming form to begin this season with the Oilers. However, the team has since started playing better collectively and fans will be hoping a similar fate awaits Arvidsson.
In the meantime, it's a case of getting Arvidsson back on the ice and playing in regular season action. When that is remains to be seen, but at least he's finally headed in a positive direction.
