Reports have surfaced linking Trent Frederic and the Edmonton Oilers to a long-term extension.

The first report, from noted insider Frank Seravalli, suggests that Frederic and the Oilers have a deal in place for a max-term, eight-year deal worth somewhere between $3.5 and $4 million AAV.

The deal likely won’t be announced for some time as the Oilers continue negotiating with UFAs. Then, there’s RFA Evan Bouchard who’ll most probably draw the most attention from the team this offseason.

Frederic joined the Oilers at this year’s trade deadline. He was injured at the time of the three-team trade that sent Frederic from Boston to Edmonton via New Jersey.

He played in one regular-season game before suiting up for all 22 of the Oilers’ postseason games. He chipped in one goal and three assists for four points.

Frederic racked up 14 penalty minutes during the messy Game 3 against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.

Signing Frederic at this point seems like a solid move for the Oilers. The club could lose several depth players potentially including Connor Brown, Kasperi Kapanen, and ageless wonder Corey Perry.

So, holding on to Frederic makes sense for the Oilers as they look to retool their roster this offseason.

Second insider links Trent Frederic to Edmonton Oilers

A second notable insider, Andy Strickland, linked Trent Frederic to the Oilers.

In an X post, Strickland reported that the deal between Frederic and the Oilers is believed to be eight years at around $4 million per season.

Strickland’s report coincides with Seravalli's, suggesting that there is plenty of teeth to this rumor.

Both Strickland and Seravalli’s reports are mildly eyebrow-raising as The Athletic estimated in its NHL Free-Agent Big Board that Frederic would land a two-year deal worth roughly $3.44 million AAV.

While Chris Johnston, the mastermind behind the board, nailed the AAV, the term is surprising. Perhaps the Oilers see something in Frederic that the rest of the league doesn’t. It could be that the Oilers are making a big bet on Frederic’s ability to turn into a bona fide power forward who could contribute 20 to 30 goals per season.

That could be the case if the plan is to line up Frederic with either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.

Whatever the case, the reports from Strickland and Seravalli point toward Trent Frederic remaining a fixture with the Edmonton Oilers for the foreseeable future.
