At Oil on Whyte, we have been taking a look at players the Edmonton Oilers should pursue with the 52nd overall pick at the upcoming 2026 NHL Draft.

There are many different directions the Oilers could go with this pick, especially given their prospect pool is lacking at most if not all areas.

One player that we have not looked at yet is Owen Sound Attack winger, Pierce Mbuyi.

Pierce Mbuyi

Mbuyi is an undersized winger, measuring in at slightly over 5'10 and 160lbs at the 2026 NHL scouting combine. The former seventh overall pick at the 2024 Ontario Hockey League priority selection has blossomed into one of the most high impact forwards across the OHL, finishing third in scoring amongst draft eligible players, sixth in terms of points per game.

Last season, his first in the OHL, he broke out onto the scene scoring 29 goals and 23 assists for 52 points in 63 games. This past year, he scored 32 goals and 43 assists for 75 points in 68 games. His goal scoring ability is evident, averaging over 30 goals in both seasons while seeing a major uptick in his playmaking and play driving abilities.

In addition to his offensive game, Mbuyi plays the game with a very strong motor, getting into the faces of opposing players and is unafraid to get involved physically. He uses this all over the ice, throwing his body at opponents and puts forward a very strong effort in all three zones. His game is reminiscent of fellow OHL draft pick and undersized winger, Nicholas Robertson who was labelled as a small but highly energetic and smart player, who possessed a strong shot, like Mbuyi.

He is committed to join Penn State University for next season, leaving the OHL behind in favour of continuing his development in the NCAA. This is a great place for him to further his development with the college route giving him time to refine his game against grown adults and giving him ample time to add strength to his frame.

NHL Projection

There is always risk with drafting an undersized winger, especially when that player tries to partake in the physical side of the game. However, Mbuyi shows a lot of two-way abilities and with his energy and forechecking game, he could slot in safely as a bottom-six energy forward who can chip in some depth scoring and defensive responsibility.

At his ceiling, Mbuyi is likely a secondary offensive piece, possessing a good shot and some solid playmaking and passing ability. Especially if he gets a chance to play with one of the Oilers' stars likeConnor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, Mbuyi could see a real unlocking of his true offensive potential.

Time will tell but Mbuyi has a lot of upside and enough of the fundamentals down to be a good swing at 52nd overall. We will find out for sure on Friday if the Oilers agree.
