Shakir Mukhamadullin is the perfect Darnell Nurse replacement

The adage that the team getting the best piece wins the trade applies in most situations. Darnell Nurse, now a member of the San Jose Sharks, is certainly the best player amongst those involved in the trade between the Edmonton Oilers and the Sharks, so traditional knowledge suggests Edmonton lost the transaction. That's likely true for the 2026-27 season, based solely on the players involved.

There is a chance that Oilers general manager Stan Bowman utilizes his newfound cap space well enough that the Oilers see a larger overall benefit from the deal, but that more realistically means that both teams won, rather than the Sharks losing after the fact. Way back in 1995, the Dallas Stars felt like they were one piece away from winning the Stanley Cup, and they saw that piece on the Calgary Flames in Joe Nieuwendyk. The Stars went on to win it all, so that assessment was accurate and they certainly didn't regret the acquisition, but there was a player who went the other way, though few knew his full potential at the time, named Jarome Iginla.

Only time will tell

In no way am I suggesting that the Oilers just imported a future Hockey Hall of Famer in the form of 24 year old Shakir Mukhamadullin (pronounced: sha-KEER mook-ah-muh-DOO-lihn). While we don't know that isn't going to be the case, it's not the most likely outcome. What we can project, based on the left-shot defender's 80ish games of NHL action, is that he has size and some skill, and managed an all situations PDO that was close to positive, in spite of playing his first couple seasons for a pretty bad Sharks team.

Mukhamadullin is a big body at 6'4" and while he hasn't been a fighter, he hits the other team consistently. He should be able to fill the deterrence portion of Nurse's role in the minutes he plays next season. He possesses an above positional average shot in terms of both speed and accuracy and one can predict that will only get harder and more accurate as the years progress.

Another common line of thinking is that you don't truly know what a defensive prospect will be until they've played 250-300 or so NHL games. Evan Bouchard took a massive step forward around the time he played his 250th game, and it's easily within the realm of possibility that Mukhamadullin will do the same. He's unlikely to have Bouchard's offensive upside, but that isn't the role the Oilers need him to play anyways. If he can limit chances against, keeping the net front clear and allowing his goaltender to see shots as they approach and make key saves, then he's doing the job. Add in the expected truculence, and the Oilers just might have the player they need.
