Why The Oilers Should Choose Broberg Over Holloway
As the clock ticks down on the Oilers to match the Blues offer sheet, the Edmonton Oilers have a couple of tough choices coming up.
The Edmonton Oilers have found themselves in a bit of a pickle. When the St. Louis Blues have offer sheeted Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway it put the Oilers in a really tough spot financially. If they choose to match either of the offers they would likely have to trade away one of their current roster players.
Of the players that would need to be traded the leading candidates are either Brett Kulak or Cody Ceci. While the Oilers have decent defensive depth, no matter which players move up the line up to fill that spot it will be a downgrade. This why the Blues made a good move by offer sheeting these two players right now as the Oilers likely will not be able to match either of them, but if they can only match one here are some reasons why they should match Broberg over Dylan Holloway.
The Oilers Don’t Have Another Broberg In The System
In the Oilers depth chart, there are several forwards that can play Holloway's 3rd line minutes, but when it comes to younger players on the back end the Edmonton Oilers don't have anyone that could step up and fill an NHL spot right now.
The Oilers knew that heading into the season which is why they signed players like Troy Stetcher and Josh Brown. Those two players were penciled into the 7th and 8th defenseman spots. Unfortunately for the Edmonton Oilers, they may now be forced to move both of them up the depth chart with the potential loss of Philip Broberg.
While in a perfect world the Oilers can find a way to keep the roster exactly the same, it doesn't look like that is going to be the case. They are going to lose at least one roster player, and on a team that has potential to win the cup this year the player or players they are going to lose are actually good players.
