The Edmonton Oilers were going through some serious self-reflection during the beginning of the 2023/24 season, and it did not fare well with the fans in the City of Edmonton amidst a coaching change, which may have impacted certain relationships. However, the team came together at the quarter mark of the stretch and went on a dominating run the league had feared in general.

The Coaching Change

Their run was so spectacular that it changed the team's perspective in the NHL and mainly gave them the credibility of a team that ran like a well-oiled machine. Not to mention the effects of having a brand-new look behind the bench with notable names leading the way.

This team became the league's powerhouse that took a commanding charge in winning games. The spectacle of Connor McDavid scoring 60 and breaking the assists record in the playoffs, along with Leon Draisaitl, was the highlight for the fans watching around North America.

The 16-game win streak by the Edmonton Oilers

The 16-straight winning streak was impressive because of its implications for the other teams in the Pacific Division. That particular win streak was special for the fans and the team, dedicating their respective efforts to be the leaders in the beloved City of Edmonton and present a polished game to their approach.

The run had all the ingredients of a well-rounded team and Oiled Machine. Because of the squad's intense gameplay in the league, it was quite the effort of the coaching staff's attitude towards the talented roster to bring out the best in the players and go on.

The Big Run by Zach Hyman

The emergence of Zych Hyman was the most memorable night against the Los Angeles Kings team after the season's quarter mark, to becoming a 70-goal scored in the NHL and leading the way in the post-season.

Corey Perry being reinstated into the NHL

Another aspect to look at was the reinstating of Corey Perry in the NHL and the decorated forward signing with the Edmonton Oilers. His presence uplifted the Oilers player's spirit and provided motivation for the team's self-esteem for the lack of experience the team possessed in the upcoming 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

The first round of the post-season, where the Edmonton Oilers team took their time to work out the kinks for more dominant teams, in case they would go up against as the season advanced. Luckily, playing the Vancouver Canucks, which was a fierce battle itself, brought out the best in both teams. With the Oilers coming out strong in the respected series.

The series was intense in general because of its type of matchup. Both were equally matched in offense and defensive coverage, with the Canucks having a slight advantage in the goaltending situation. However, Stuart Skinner stood tall with the saves and gave his Oilers squad the edge in the series.

It was a mesmerizing time during the post-season when the Oilers played the Dallas Stars, but their opponent did come to lose. The Stars had other plans, even though they ran out of gas in the 5th game, which led to a 4-2 series clincher in the 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

Even though the Oilers had their opportunities the Stars stacked defense and potent offense kept the games close, but it was not enough to stop the threat of Edmonton picking apart the team.

The 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Finals were disappointing at the beginning of the series, going into the third game, but the Edmonton Oilers superteam had done the somewhat impossible coming back the next three games. But, ultimately, losing the 7th game to the Florida Panthers.

The Oilers team showed dedication and heavy resilience; however, just plainly ran out of gas. In the final frame of the season. Which was respectable considering their efforts all season long and during the final stages of the post-season.

We applaud their respective efforts and have high hopes for the start to end of the 2024/25 NHL season, including the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
