Is Stan Bowman the next Oilers GM? If you protest the choice you're a hypocrite.

The Oilers choice for GM is still unsure as of the date of this writing, July 14. One choice for GM is causing a controversy in Edmonton, which is perplexing to me as fans seem to embrace players with a checkered past but somehow executives with a checkered past are off limits? How is this your line in the sand? This make no sense to me.

This and that

Captain Obvious states the obvious

It is a little ridiculous as to what they do surveys on these days. I could've told you Flames fans were unhappy about their team without spending buckets of money on coming up with this dumpster fire of a study.

Let's see, in the past few seasons, the Flames have been forced to say goodbye to Matthew Tkachuk, Tyler Toffoli, Johnny Gaudreau, Jakob Markstrom, TJ Brodie, Noah Hanifin, Andrew Mangiapane, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, and Sean Monahan. That's a pretty hefty bag of scoring and defense that has exodused the team. Also Jakob Markstrom.....was there. The inept ownership of the Flames thought all they needed was a retooling and didn't want to rebuild the team, but now they have no choice. To say nothing of hiring dumpster fires like Mike Keenan, Brad Treliving, and Darryl Sutter. No one in Calgary would be happy about that, although it was a little surprising to see they were more miserable than fans of the now departed Arizona Coyotes.

Meanwhile, the Maple Laffs have been a league laughingstock for a while now. They have but a single playoff series victory to show for spending half their cap on four forwards. Funny how when you need depth to win in the playoffs and your team is top heavy you'll never have any success in the playoffs because you have no choice but to go bargain basement shopping to stock your roster. Notice how no other team in the league is building their roster this way? And to replace Kyle Dubas they hired a guy who never rocked the boat in Brad Treliving while he was in Calgary despite the fact his roster was crying out for major changes? Expect him to be just as tone deaf about the Maple Leafs roster where the task in 10 times harder. Oh, and did I mention those four forwards you have locked up to big money contracts always disappear in the playoffs when your team needs them most? Quite the dumpster fire Toronto has for a hockey team these days. I'd be pretty unhappy if I were a Leafs fan too.

The Oilers, on the other hand, have a city full of affordable housing, high wages, lots of attractions, the two best players in the world, and a team that came within two goals of winning the Stanley Cup. Oh, and they get to watch the team in a state of the art arena that is widely acknowledged as one of the best in the league.

Also, I recently watched a great YouTube video on how enrollment in hockey is declining, and the reasons why. It's a multifaceted problem without an easy solution, no idea how we're going to fix it but it definitely needs to be fixed.
