Period Of Mourning Over, Offseason Starts Now For Edmonton Oilers

It has been only 2 days since the Edmonton Oilers lost game 7 to the Florida Panthers, but while the players can now rest the hockey ops team gets busy.

As the Edmonton Oilers are doing their post season locker clean out and most fans are slowly getting over the game 7 loss, the offseason still carries on. The one issue with going on a deep run is the fact that it is a very fast turnaround to the big moments in the offseason.

For the Oilers, there are a few players who they are going to want to re-sign while at the same time, there are going to be a few that I think will not be returning. For the ones that they are going to be looking to re-sign, if they want them to not go to free agency, they only have a couple of days to get those deals done.

Even before free agency the NHL Entry Draft takes place. While the Oilers don't till the end of the second round, there are still many reasons to turn on the draft as an Oilers fan. At the draft all the GMs are in one room and when GMs are together trades happen. For the Oilers, there is always an area in which they could improve.

Moves To Watch For The Oilers This Offseason

Jack Campbell Contract

The biggest move on the horizon for the Edmonton Oilers is elevating cap space. The easy way to do that is to move on from the Jack Campbell contract. I don't know how they are going to do it, whether by trade or by buyout. The best option would be a trade, but I think there is no chance Campbell is on this team next season.

Re-Sign UFA/RFA's

The majority of the Edmonton Oilers' bottom six is up for a new contract. The Oilers depth played well down the stretch and in the playoffs, most noticeable Connor Brown and Mattias Janmark. Both of those players are UFA's so they can sign anywhere. Hopefully, they are willing to take a little bit less money to stay with the Oilers cause when it comes to cap space that is something the Oilers don't have.

This is just a short breakdown of the Edmonton Oilers off-season. We here at Oil On Whyte will take much deeper dives on every aspect of this team over the next couple of months. From the buyout period to preseason, there will be some sort of article written about it. So stay tuned for a short, but fun offseason.
