This offseason has been full of moves for the Edmonton Oilers, both bringing in UFA's as well as acquiring some players via trade. This means that there are going to be a few new faces coming to training camp this season. While it is a real niche group of people, I know there are other people out there like me that always wonder what number a new player is going to pick.
For a player while they are playing the game I am sure that their jersey number is the last thing on their mind, but for a fan it is the best way for the to identify them when on the ice or it could be the potential for a jersey purchase if they find success. Another point of jerseys is to take a look at who were players to wear the number before the current player.
Jeff Skinner #53
With Jeff Skinner picking number 53, he becomes the first player in Oilers history to wear that number. Get used to seeing it this season though, cause I believe he will be the winger on either McDavid's or Draisaitl's line.
Viktor Arvidsson #33
Just as with Skinner I would start to getting accustom of seeing the #33 on the ice. Also slotted right now in the Oilers top 6 he is bound to get a lot of ice time. Notable previous Oilers to wear the #33, goaltender Cam Talbot and tough guy Steve MacIntyre.
Matthew Savoie #22
While Savoie may not be on the NHL club for this season, he will be playing in quite a few preseason games and in those games I hope to see him find success. Being the main piece coming back in the McLeod trade there is some potential that Savoie could become a decent full time NHL player. 22 has been a fairly popular number in Oilers history, the likes of Tyson Barrie, Charlie Huddy and Roman Hamrlik have once worn this number for the Oilers.
Josh Brown #44, Connor Carrick#58
Both of these players likely will not be used for the big club unless there is an injury to one of the starting 6 defensemen, but just like for Savoie you will probably get a healthy dose of these players in the preseason.
For the history of these two numbers. For 44 there is a quite a bit, most notable is Chris Pronger and for the number 58 there have been a few with the most memorable would be Jeff Petry.
While we may only see some of these numbers a couple time on the ice this year while watching the Edmonton Oilers, there is the chance that by the end of the season we will be seeing a lot of these brand new jersey numbers in the stand cheering the Oilers as they look to hoist the cup.
