The Edmonton Oilers Will Likely Lose Their Next Trade

With the Edmonton Oilers being over the cap, they will need to shed salary. The most likely way to do that is via trade, a trade they will likely lose.

As the Edmonton Oilers have their time away from the ice the upcoming season's roster is starting to take shape. With many good signings so far this offseason the Oilers look poised to make another deep run towards the Stanley Cup. Even with that being said there is still work for this management team to do.

As it stands right now the Edmonton Oilers are over the cap by just over $350,000 and still have to re-sign Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. Those two players may not be commanding a large amount of money, but the fact of the matter is the Oilers will need to shed some salary and everyone knows it, so making a trade to rid themselves of some cap will not be an easy task.

While the Oilers have already traded away Ryan McLeod to make a little bit of space, they still have quite a bit required to move out. This is going to likely require an additional trade for the Oilers to become cap compliant. The problem is that everyone knows what the Oilers need to do so they can push them to overpay in order to take some cap.

This could cause the Oilers to be in some trouble. Unless there is a team that would actually want to add a player that the Oilers have on their roster, that the Oilers are willing to part with. Of that list of players, the most likely to be moved is still Cody Ceci. Ceci was playing 3rd pairing for most of that playoff run and is getting paid over $3 million. If they can get rid of that money the Oilers would have enough room to be cap compliant and to re-sign Holloway and Broberg.

Even if a team would be interested in one of the Oilers players they still have the high ground and will be able to take advantage of the Oilers who are dealing from an area of weakness. While the Oilers do need to make at least one move, I only hope that if they do need to overpay, they do not overpay too much.
