Edmonton Oilers Start Preseason Schedule Today Against Winnipeg Jets
While it has been one of the shortest offseason in a long time the Oilers are once again hitting the ice today in their first preseason game.
For the first time since the Edmonton Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in game 7 in the Stanley Cup. While this offseason was as short as it possibly could have been, I am not alone in feeling excited for the Oilers to start playing meaningful games again. The preseason signifies just how close were are to the start of the regular season.
The Oilers start their preseason tonight at home as they host the Winnipeg Jets. With this being the frist game of the preseason we should expect to see a weak lineup from both of these teams. There have been no cuts from either of the training camps, so this game is to be mostly made up of non-NHL players. So it will not be a very highly skilled game it will be a game where the players are going to be trying their hardest to make a good impression.
The preseason for most NHL players is about getting back into the swing of things, for the fringe players it is about making a good impression on the NHL coaching staff. If there are any injuries during the regular season these are the players that will be called up to play on the team and this is their chance to prove to the NHL team that they can handle the play of the NHL.
We do not know the lineups as of the time of me writing this article, but as I said above don't expect to see a best on best type of game type of game this afternoon. There is always a chance that we could see the likes of McDavid and Draisaitl tonight, but if I was a betting man I would expect that you would not see them for a couple of games. The only reason you may see them tonight is that the game is in Edmonton.
