Dylan Holloway's Great Game For Oilers Changes Nothing

Dylan Holloway played an excellent game against the Vegas Golden Knights, but it changes nothing for when this team is healthy.

Dylan Holloway played what was without a doubt his best game of the season against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Oilers' 5-1 win on Wednesday. Then why even though he played so well does nothing change in the lineup when everyone is healthy?

The main reason why Holloway will not be in the lineup when everyone is healthy is his style of play is built for the top 9 and the Edmonton Oilers when fully healthy would not be upgrading if he played in the top 9. That is why right now with McDavid injured he got the call up. I think if a 4th line player got injured they would have called up Sam Gagner or Adam Erne.

This isn't really a bad thing for Dylan Holloway though because the last game showed that he can play in the NHL in a top 9 role and have success. It just might not be this year. On the plus side for Holloway and the Edmonton Oilers, they both know there is that success if something does happen in these last few games or the playoffs.

What Does This Mean For Holloway?

My best guess is as soon as McDavid is playing games again Holloway will be on his way back to the Bakersfield Condors, where he can play in the playoffs in the AHL. In Bakersfield, he will be able to grow his game against weaker competition. He can work on things that will make him a better player.

When next season rolls around he will be a heavy favourite to be in the Oilers' top 9. I don't see both Foegele and Henrique returning next season, so that will leave at least one spot open for Holloway. Plus being on his entry deal Holloway will be what the Oilers need as they are likely going to be right up against the cap ceiling again next year.

We still don't know when McDavid will be back in the lineup with his current injury, but till then I feel like when it comes to replacements in the lineup Holloway is one of the better options out there. If he keeps playing the way he did against Vegas then maybe he can make me eat my words by forcing the coaching staff to keep him.
