The clock is ticking for Stan Bowman and the Edmonton Oilers general manager appears ready to make his move.
With March 6 rapidly approaching, Edmonton has ramped up negotiations with the Chicago Blackhawks over veteran defenseman Connor Murphy, according to insider Elliotte Friedman.Â
The pursuit marks a reunion of sorts as Bowman, who previously worked in Chicago's front office, is now targeting a player he knows well to address his current team's most pressing weakness.
Hearing talks are intensifying for Edmonton to acquire Connor Murphy from Chicago.

Oilers blue line really needs help
Edmonton's offense has rarely been the problem. Sitting third in the Pacific with 66 points, the Oilers can score with anyone. But their defensive zone coverage and goaltending protection remain significant vulnerabilities that could doom any playoff aspirations.
And Murphy might be exactly what Edmonton needs who does the unglamorous work. His 84 blocked shots and 58 hits through 58 games this season speaks of a player willing to play just as physically required. More importantly, he's a proven penalty killer, just what head coach Kris Knoblauch needs to shield an inconsistent netminding duo.
The financial angle to a possible Murphy trade
Murphy's $4.4 million cap hit presents a challenge for a cap-strapped organization but Chicago's willingness to retain salary could unlock the deal. That flexibility would be important for Edmonton as it would allow them to add quality without gutting their roster or future assets.
The reported return? A second round draft pick. Seems like a reasonable price for a rental who addresses an immediate need without mortgaging the future.
Trade call is not expected to be formally completed until later tonight, but EDM and CHI have agreed upon:

The Murphy fit
What makes Murphy particularly valuable is how he complements Edmonton's existing pieces. By absorbing defensive zone minutes and penalty-killing duties, he'd free up Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse to focus on their offensive strengths.
The Oilers would essentially be adding a specialist who allows their skilled players to play to their strengths.
His right-shot availability also fills a specific roster gap providing Knoblauch with more lineup flexibility and better matchup options.
As for now, talks seem to have progressed beyond preliminary discussions. If salary retention terms can be finalized, Murphy could be wearing Oilers colors within days.
For Bowman, the pressure is of course only growing. Edmonton's "win-now" window is wide open and leaving the deadline without addressing their defensive deficiencies would be a costly mistake with the Golden Knights ahead of them in the standings.
The next 48 hours will reveal whether this longtime target finally lands in Alberta.
