The Edmonton Oilers may not be done making big additions after all, according to recent reports on trade deadline day.

NHL insider Kevin Weekes made a bombshell report connecting the Oilers to Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Weekes said "I'm told the Oilers and Bobrovsky's camp have had some conversations."

At this stage, it is unclear how serious those conversations have been in regards to a deadline acquisition but with the Panthers far out of a playoff spot and Bobrovsky in the final year of his contract, it makes sense.

Things move fast on deadline day and there seems to be well connected Oilers insiders who are split with TSN's Ryan Rishaug pouring cold water on their search for goaltending. While Sportsnet's Mark Spector seems to believe the Oilers could be engaged in talks.

Bobrovsky or another goaltender?

On X (formerly Twitter), Weekes also claimed that there have been varying conversations surrounding many goalies across the league, not specifically in regards to the Oilers. However, he did name drop Oilers netminder Connor Ingram.

If the Oilers are in on a true goaltending upgrade, it could absolutely change their trajectory as a Stanley Cup contender, especially if they can get Bobrovsky who has captured two straight.

Off-season seems most likely for a goaltending move

The Oilers acquired Tristan Jarry in December and he has two more seasons at $5.375 million annual average value. His deal could be more difficult to move than anticipated, especially given his drop in save percentage and other key performance indicators since joining the Oilers.

There is also the issue of the team lacking high end trade assets which hurts their trade flexibility. They are without their 2026 and 2027 first round picks and their 2028 and 2029 second round picks. The Oilers also do not have a very robust prospect pool, something that could hurt them in negotiations for a rental.

In the off-season, it may make more sense for the Oilers to make a change in net when everybody has more cap space available, making the possibility of moving a big money deal a little more palatable.

Given there are only a few hours until the deadline, it seems unlikely that the Oilers will make a big splash in net before the 3:00 PM deadline but things can always change.
