Oilers receive performance bonus overage cap hit for 2025-26 season

The Edmonton Oilers are one of at least 11 teams to be hit with the NHL salary cap penalty for next season, but at least they are not as badly off as last time.

With the 2024-25 NHL regular season now done and dusted, the Edmonton Oilers can focus on a fourth consecutive year of facing the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs, albeit this will be the first time without home-ice advantage against their Pacific Division rivals. However, even with preparations in full flow for the bright lights of the postseason, the organization still has to keep one eye on the future.

In this respect, as reported by PuckPedia, the Oilers are one of at least 11 NHL teams who will carry a Performance Bonus Overage cap hit into the 2025-26 season. However, before fans in Edmonton worry too much, the amount is nowhere near as much as last time around, when their bonus overage carryover was the highest in the NHL, at $3.45 million.

Oilers would love to have a Corey Perry problem

As things stand the Oilers have the second-lowest penalty cap hit at $150K, but it could rise to as much as $250K. The extra $100K would come courtesy of Corey Perry's contract having an additional $50K if the team wins round two in this season's playoffs, and the same amount for winning round three.

Under these circumstances you would have to assume the organization won't mind too much, as it mean they have reached the Stanley Cup Final for a second consecutive season. Again though, in the grand scheme of things a potential $250K total cap hit is a lot better than $3.45 million.

We appreciate there will be those who argue that every cent counts, especially with the Oilers more than likely taking aim at attempting to extend Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard during the summer. However, as per NHL.com, even here things will be better for the team financially speaking, as the salary cap is set to rise by $7.5 million to $95.5 million for next season and then by another $8.5 million to $104 million in 2026-27.

General Performance Bonus Overage Cap Hit notes

The St. Louis Blues will have the highest cap penalty hit, at over $2.153 million. ... 12 NHL teams will be hit with the cap penalty hit, if Ryan Leonard wins the Conn Smythe for the Washington Capitals. ... This is still less than the 15 teams who were penalized in 2023-24, which is a league record.
