It was first reported on Friday morning that the Edmonton Oilers had signed head coach Kris Knoblauch to a multi-year contract extension. TSN National Hockey League (NHL) insider Darren Dreger was first on the news.

Knoblauch was entering the season on the final year of his contract, after leading the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances behind the bench after replacing Jay Woodcroft in 2023.
So far in his career in Oil country he has a combined regular season record of 94-47-10 in 151 games with a .656 winning percentage. In the post season he has a 29-18 record through 47 games with a .617 winning percentage and two Western Conference championships.
Knoblauch signing now relieves pressure
This extension is set to keep him behind the Oilers bench for years to come as the club attempts to make a Stanley Cup Finals run for a third straight season. There have been very few coaches in Oilers history who have experienced the level of success as Knoblauch, especially this quickly.
Knoblauch's new contract is set to kick in next year, for the 2026-27 season but allows the bench boss to enter the year with some job security. When speaking on his extension recently he said "I'm quite confident that something's going to be done".
Thankfully that is one big piece of business that has now been checked off the to-do list for the Oilers general manager, Stan Bowman. It has been a busy week as the Oilers had to make cuts try to finalize their roster ahead of Monday's deadline and before the season begins next week.
As well, the club recently acquired goaltender Connor Ingram from the Utah Mammoth to help shore up their team between the pipes.
Next up on the list should be the extension for team captain, Connor McDavid.
