Has the Edmonton Oilers' goaltending suddenly become the biggest driving force for the team's success? I'm aware that a league-leading offense is a thing, but it's clear that the Oilers' goaltending has done its part in keeping matches from consistently becoming track meets.
Tristan Jarry has been a key player in this regard, and his work with regard to keeping games from becoming too lopsided and holding the fort amid a series of injuries has earned him the honor of being the second Star of the Week for the last week of October.
He is now the fourth Oilers player to make a Stars of the Week list this season; Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard, and Leon Draisaitl made it onto past editions of the Stars of the Week list. In addition, Jarry's inclusion in this week's edition of the league's weekly award for individual player performances means that an Oilers player has made the Stars of the Week list for the third consecutive week.
Jarry made a total of three appearances last week, putting together a 2-0-1 record over that span. That three-game run also saw him record a net .957 save percentage and two games worth of shutout hockey.
The former Pittsburgh Penguin is now 4-1-2 on the season. He has a 2.53 goals against average and a .901 save percentage across those seven starts. Jarry has also recorded just over 150 total saves to start the season; the resulting saves per game metric would have him on pace for a 900-save season if he were to start half of Edmonton's 84 regular-season contests.
The other two Stars of the Week
Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson was named the first Star of the Week for the previous week of action. He recorded five goals and three assists as the Sabres swept their California road trip; they picked up respective 2-0, 7-6, and 3-2 wins over the San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, and Los Angeles Kings.
The third Star of the Week went to Ducks forward Leo Carlsson. Despite recording just one goal, he also had seven assists during a week that saw the Ducks put together a 1-1-1 record. That record included an aforementioned regulation loss to the Sabres, a 6-5 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks, and a 6-3 win in their most recent game against the Ottawa Senators. The latter two contests saw Carlsson record a combined six assists.
