The Edmonton Oilers announced their rookie camp roster on Thursday with plenty of expected names and a few camp invites as well. The annual camp kicks off on Friday where they will practice over the weekend before facing their Alberta rivals, the Calgary Flames on Monday, September 14th.

Interestingly, the Oilers only invited five players to their camp in total, none of which were goaltenders. This is not surprising given the organizational logjam between the pipes but it does feature Eemil Vinni who recently signed a one-year deal with the Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.
There only being five invites is less than in previous years but the Oilers seemed to focus on quality more than anything with these invites. There are multiple invitees who seem like interesting prospects with some legitimate potential to make an impact in the organization.
Oilers invite five players to their rookie camp
The Oilers announced they have invited 18 year old Weston Cameron, a physically mature forward who spent this past season with the 2026 Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. he scored six goals, 10 assists for 16 points in 44 games in his first full season in major junior. He is known for his two-way play and willingness to play physically, fitting the Oilers M.O. quite well as a player who has a projectable game. After Oilers rookie camp, he is set to spend another year with the Rangers and is committed to the University of Massachusetts of the NCAA for the 2027-28 season.
Simon Tassy is a 25 year old forward who was signed by the Bakersfield Condors for the upcoming season, after spending four years in the NCAA, playing his freshman year with Minnesota State University and the final three years with the University of Wisconsin. Last season he had his second best year statistically, scoring 14 goals and 9 assists for 23 points in 39 games played and is set to play with either the Condors or the Oilers' ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets.
The Oilers also invited 18 year old Finnish forward, Olli Wahlroos. He is an intriguing prospect who has impressed, rising the ranks of the Finnish junior leagues playing 24 games for the TPS U20 team, scoring eight goals, seven assists for 15 points. He has also represented Finland at the international level at the World Junior U-17s, U-18s, and Hlinka Gretzky Cup amongst others. He is a dual-threat winger with smooth hands and high end puckskills, capable of racking up points and driving offence. He was selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings at the 2026 CHL import draft and is set to play for them this upcoming season.
Uncharacteristically, the Oilers have invited undersized right-shot defenceman in Zach Bookman. He is a smooth skating puckmover who spent three seasons with Merrimack College and this past year with Western Michigan University, after posting over 100 points with the Brooks Bandits of the AJHL. He is 24 years old and signed with the Bakersfield Condors this season and looks to make an impact at either the AHL or ECHL level.
Another intriguing addition is Kyle Heger, who is an 18 year old left-handed defenceman with some legitimate offensive upside. He racked up 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists) through 64 games in his first season in the WHL split between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Lethbridge Hurricanes. He is committed to Western Michigan University for the 2027-28 season.
Looking at these players, a common theme is that the Oilers invited multiple young 18 year olds who have true offensive upside. This is a strategy that a team like Edmonton, that lacks high end prospects must employ if they hope to supplement their stars. Like most years, these invites may not materialize but there is always the potential that the Oilers may be able to find a gem.
