It is no secret that the Edmonton Oilers do not have a robust prospect pool with an abundance of picks looking ahead. This means that general manager Stan Bowman will have to get creative in order to help replenish his prospect pool, dipping into secondary markets outside of the draft.
In a hard salary cap league like the NHL, being able to receive secondary contributions from players such as those on entry-level contracts (ELCs) is incredibly valuable. The Oilers have been able, especially since Bowman took over, to inject young talent into their team.
One of the ways the team has accomplished this is through trades, like sending Ryan McLeod to the Buffalo Sabres for Matt Savoie in 2024 and by trading prospect Sam O'Reilly to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a perceived upgrade in Isaac Howard.
Another way has been through free agency, both by attracting college free agents and from various European leagues. The club has added many players through this route to their prospect pipeline and in many cases, they have not yet reaped the benefits except with Josh Samanski who is currently carving out in the bottom-six, being groomed to become their shutdown centre of the future.
Oilers continue to replenish prospect pool in free agency
Given the strides the Oilers have taken to supplment their prospect pool, it is no surprise that the club has made recent signings as the NCAA season and European seasons come to an end.
It started with the Oilers signing 22 year old Czech free agent defenceman, Tomas Cibulka to a two-year ELC beginning in 2026-27. They were able add him into their team, helping to bolster their American Hockey League depth in the short term with the hopeful benefit of him blossoming into an NHL worthy player. Cibulka is an intriguing addition to their pool and will likely take some lead time to develop.
The next player the Oilers signed is NCAA free agent, 23 year old right-handed centre Owen Michaels to a one-year ELC. His contract kicks in immediately, meaning his contract expires at the end of this season. This move allows the club the ability to sign him as an RFA right away.
Oilers rumoured to be interested in other free agents
In addition to the players already signed, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that the Oilers are interested in German player Veit Oswald. Oswald is a 21 year old playing in top German league, the DEL. He has been a rising star in his home country for years and a highly productive player moving up the ranks. This past season, Oswald scored 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 38 games.
The Oilers pursuing the young German Oswald makes sense given the team's connections with hockey in that country. The Oilers have the greatest German hockey player in Leon Draisaitl and a rising young German player in Samanski.
If the Oilers could inject Oswald into their prospect pool, it would be a huge addition to their pool with his historic ability to produce at various levels.
