If Canada is going to try and wrest control of the hockey world from the Americans, then Thursday's quarterfinal contest was the perfect place to start.

Despite losing Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard due to a head injury sustained from a hit by Seattle Kraken defenseman Ryan Lindgren, Canada dominated the United States from start to finish, ultimately winning by a 4-0 scoreline.

Canada vs USA recap

While there was no scoring for much of the first period, San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini would record what ended up being the game-winning goal with just 90 seconds left in the opening period. Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele recorded the primary assist on the goal, while Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk earned the secondary helper.

At the midway point of the game, former Oilers forward Dylan Holloway - who is currently a member of the St Louis Blues - recorded the insurance goal for Canada; Scheifele recorded the sole assist on the goal.

Former Oiler/New Jersey Devils forward Connor Brown added one of the two late-frame goals during the third period of action, while Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby recorded Canada's fourth goal of the game.

Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse recorded an assist on Crosby's goal.

Relevant statistics and facts

With the win over the United States, Canada has now won three of their last five head-to-head matchups with the Americans. The other two wins took place in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and in the gold medal game of the Four Nations Face-Off.

Despite losing by four goals, the United States remained competitive in the shots on goal count, only losing that by a 38-34 margin.

The Americans had 33 penalty minutes, with twenty-five of them and a game misconduct being assessed to Lindgren for his hit on Bouchard.

Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Jet Greaves earned the shutout for Canada, while Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley was in net for the United States' loss.

What's next?

After finishing the group stage with a 3-1-0-3 record (wins, overtime wins, overtime losses, losses), the Americans will not have the chance to defend their gold medal from the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Canada will have two chances to win a medal this weekend as the 2026 World Championship reaches its conclusion. The first of those two chances will come on Saturday when Canada takes on Finland, who defeated Czechia 4-1 in their quarterfinal encounter, in semifinal action.

If Canada defeats Finland, they will take on the winner of the Switzerland-Norway game for a chance at World Championship gold. If they lose, they will play the loser of the other semifinal for a chance at bronze.
