Continuing our 2026-27 Oilers prospect rankings and following up our No. 5 ranked prospect, we have David Lewandowski ranked fourth.
Lewandowski was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round, 117th overall at the 2025 NHL Draft. He is a German born forward, currently 19 years old and is listed at 6'2 176lbs according to his eliteprospects profile.
He spent the majority of his draft year in the Western Hockey League playing with the Saskatoon Blades, after a short seven game stint in the top flight German league DEL with his hometown club Dusseldorfer EG.
In 52 games with the Blades he scored 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points or a 0.75 point-per-game average. He also represented Germany on the international stage at the U-18s, World Junior Championship, and Hlinka Gretzky Cup tournaments.
Last season, he took a step forward in his production, scoring 17 goals and 48 assists for 65 points in 57 games with the Blades. He also represented Germany at the WJC once again scoring one goal and three assists in five games.
Future outlook
This season, Lewandowski has already returned to the Blades for another year where he looks to take yet another step in his development. He plays a projectable power forward game and flashes some legitimately intriguing skills, something that gives him a lot of promise as an NHL prospect.
He will play this season in Juniors once again and will likely turn pro at the end of this year or next season. From there, he will be most likely be carving out a role with the Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. There, he will develop and refine his pro game and it will be the real test for him whether he can make the show.
If he makes the NHL, he will join multiple German Oilers players as the club seems to be collecting them. He will join the likes of Leon Draisaitl and by then, probably Josh Samanski will be a full-time NHL player.
NHL potential
At best, Lewandowski projects as a secondary scoring powerforward that could carve out a role as a top-nine winger as a complimentary player alongside the Oilers stars like Connor McDavid or his fellow countryman, Draisaitl. His uptick in production has shown he can adjust and produce at a reasonable clip with the hopes that he can translate his offensive game.
As you can probably guess, Lewandowski plays a projectable game, bringing a sturdy physical presence and is not afraid to get himself into the 'dirty areas' of the ice. This provides some hope that even if he cannot find a way to make his offensive game translate he can still make it as a depth NHL player who can play in defensive situations and hound pucks.
The next few seasons will be telling for Lewandowski and his prospects of an NHL future as he tries to prove his ability to produce offensively. He has a good base of skills but can he do enough to raise his ceiling? Only time will tell but his intriguing potential mixed with his NHL likelihood is what lands him high on this list.
