The off-season has been quite busy for Edmonton Oilers management with a rehaul of the team since the quick exit in round one of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. The was an unexpected exit that fueled many questions from the leadership of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the ongoing goaltending issue and lack of belief in Coach Knoblauch and staff. Although a successful coach for the Oilers at a record of 135–77–21 in the regular season and 31-22 record in the playoffs, Knoblauch just could not motivate the team to get past the first round this past Stanley Cup playoffs.
Many attributes were lost in the 2025-2026 season including a dismal penalty kill, struggling powerplay for most of the year, inconsistent structure and play and lack of clutch goaltending. A change was needed and now the hockey world awaits to see if the new and, hopefully, improved Oilers will respond under the leadership of Mike Babcock.
What has made Babcock successful?
Mike Babcock is widely regarded as one of the most successful hockey coaches of his generation with a 700-418-183 (wins-losses-overtime loss) over 1,301 games across 17 seasons that equates to 53.8% career wins. He is currently the 3rd to 5th in most categories for active coaches.
So, he is not the best available but has a pretty good resume. He has had both international and NHL success. He led the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup championship in 2008. Internationally, Babcock coached Team Canada to Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014, as well as a World Championship title in 2004.
These successes earned him the prestige of the only coach to achieve hockey's coaching Triple Gold, winning a Stanley Cup, an IIHF World Championship, and an Olympic gold medal.
He has a coaching style that fosters success and throughout his NHL coaching career, his teams consistently qualified for the playoffs, demonstrating competitiveness. They key word in that last sentence is “competitiveness”. We have often seen that in, at best, four Oiler players game in and game out – Draisaitl, McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Zach Hyman.
After that, it is highly variable who on the Oilers show up to play. In the 2024 NHL playoffs, we witnessed a team that was in full synchronicity with each other that allowed the team to go to game 7 of the finals against the formidable Florida Panthers. Any other team could have been taken down by the Oilers, but Florida had just a bit more competitiveness than the Oilers that playoff year to win the Stanley Cup.
Can Mike Babcock get that competitiveness mentality into the heads of all or most of the Oiler roster? I think he can show his talents on the Oilers as he did in the first six years in Detroit whereby the team finished 1st and 2nd in the Central Division during those first six years. The Oilers do not need to finish 1st but need to show competitiveness and desire to get to hockey’s prize.
Will the players respond to the style of Mike Babcock?
The success of Mike Babcock is well documented. Many players respond to his style of coaching and some do not. He is known for his detail-oriented and accountability-driven coach that can be demanding sometimes. His teams have structure, discipline, and strong two-way play. Hmm…shall we all agree that was fixed with Knoblauch came on board but was somehow lost in the last season? Can Babcock bring that back?
With the fast-paced play of Connor and Leon, players have to be prepared every game with defined structure to keep up with those superstars and if you are not ready for that, well chaos, undiscipline play and giveaways happen leading to more losses than wins and a quick exit from the playoffs. Given his history, I think Babcock will bring this to the Oilers. In addition, his structured play stems from his reputation for extensive game planning, video analysis and scouting. One would think this is how all teams should be coached but in reality they are not. He is not a players coach by a long shot as he focused on success, team play and competitiveness.
How will the adjusted play of McDavid and Draisaitl impact the team?
We all have read the stories about how arrived in Edmonton. We know he has had baggage similar to Evander Kane coming, McTavish coming back in the 1980s and he will not be the last player/coach coming to the Oilers without a tainted past. But he is here now and he is our coach. We all know how important the voices of Connor and Leon were in his hire.
They were well aware of his past but willing to work with him. They both described his hire as “perfect fit to help the Edmonton Oilers win a championship” and were “strongly supported the hiring of Mike Babcock”. Both players met with Babcock before he was hired as they needed to understand his vision for this team and how he will get them to the Stanley Cup finals. Whatever was said convinced Connor and Leon to give the thumbs up to management for his hire.
Babcock is known to push players to improve daily and often challenges them mentally as well as physically. Connor and Leon have similar habits and we see how well they want to excel every game, injured or not. Will they be the first to demonstrate the structure, discipline, and strong two-way play needed for this team to succeed? We know they can and have demonstrated that for games in 2024 and other years. We need to see them do that more than ever in the upcoming season.
What is the prediction for the 2026-2027 NHL Season for the Oilers?
The hockey season will start on September 29th against the Vancouver Canucks. The Oilers will most likely have close to eight new players in their main roster opening night and a new coach. It will be an interesting start to the season with a lot of the hockey world watching how Babcock will succeed. The Oilers are a Stanely cup contender and the hope is that Babcock can take them to new heights and build a team as formidable as the Florida Panthers in 2024.
I predicted that we will have a very good season and the team will respond to the coaching of Mike Babcock. We will challenge for first place in the Pacific and qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs and we will NOT have a quick exit in round one in the 2027 Stanley Cup playoffs. We only have a two year window to do this with McDavid here in Edmonton, so let’s hope this is the right formula for this team to win the Stanley Cup in the McDavid era.
