Edmonton Oilers star forward Leon Draisaitl took an early step towards Rocket Richard contention this week, and his efforts are being recognized by the NHL.

On Monday, the league announced it's weekly Stars of the Week recipients. For the second time this season, that list included an Oilers player.

Draisaitl received the first Star of the Week just three weeks after his teammate Evan Bouchard took home the second star of the week for his efforts during the Oilers' first three games of the season. The former was joined by Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley, who Draisaitl and the Oilers will face on Wednesday in the Battle of Alberta, and Montreal Canadiens netminder Jacob Fowler.

Draisaitl recorded a whopping nine points last week

Draisaitl's case for the first Star of the Week isn't exactly the hardest to make. Through three games last week, he recorded six goals and three assists, bringing his point total on the season to 24 while putting himself on pace for well over 150 points on the season.

Each of the three games contested by the Oilers last week (against the Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, and Toronto Maple Leafs) saw Draisaitl record a pair of goals. He was quite close to recording a hat trick against Carolina, though a review on the third goal eventually led to Connor McDavid being credited with what was one of three game-tying goals.

All three of Draisaitl's assists last week came against the Hurricanes.

Elsewhere ...

Cooley's second Star of the Week came off the heels of his involvement in a win streak that has essentially revived Calgary's season after a horrific start had them on pace for the league's basement. He gave up just one goal in each of Calgary's two games last week (against the Wild and Detroit Red Wings) while recording a total of 67 saves across those contests. As a result, Cooley has put a 4-2-0 record on the board through his first six starts of the season; he has won each of his last four starts.

He did so while using what he defined as his "unconscious brain" and spending his spare time reading to his rabbit Tito and doing linear algebra.

Fowler earning the third Star of the Week came as a result of his own perfect record during the week. In two starts (against the Chicago Blackhawks and then the Winnipeg Jets in the Heritage Classic), he recorded 53 saves while conceding just two goals. The two wins brought Fowler's record on the season to 5-1-0.
