Edmonton Oilers forward Josh Samanski added his third assist of the 2026 IIHF World Championship, while Adler Mannheim forward Marc Michaelis recorded a multi-point game as Germany sped away with a 6-2 win over Hungary.

The win marked Germany's first win of the 2026 edition of the World Championship, and it brings the country's point total in the tournament up to four. The Germans' first point came in their shootout loss to the United States.

The loss put Hungary at three losses on the tournament through four games. While they could still make a run at a knockout berth (they still have to play fourth-place Latvia), they are only three points clear of last-place Great Britain, who could still pull off a great escape and send Hungary down to the lower divisions.

While Germany didn't exactly leave Hungary in the dust, the game was over by the time Hungary got on the board, as Germany had put five past Ferencvárosi TC netminder Bence Balizs.

Germany vs Hungary recap

But Hungary's late push wouldn't last long. Midway through the final frame, Gawanke completed his hat trick to put Germany up by a 6-1 scoreline; Michaelis added his third assist of the game on the goal, while Eisbären Berlin defenseman Kai Wissmann recorded the primary assist on the goal.

That said, Hungary would record the last goal of the game. With under three minutes to play in the game, Fehervar AV19 forward Janos Hari recorded Hungary's second goal of the game. The assists on the goal came from Bentley University forward Marton Nemes and Hari's teammate Roland Kiss.
