Germany recorded their third-consecutive multi-goal win on Monday as they defeated Great Britain 6-3, with the win marking the team's third straight at the 2026 IIHF World Championship. Even though the win puts Germany firmly in control of a knockout round spot with one day left in the preliminary round, the three points that came with it only serve to add to the team's ever-growing confidence.

That could be a great asset for Germany should the results on Tuesday go their way.

And Germany likely won't need that much of a break in that regard. A Latvia loss to Hungary would be enough to give Germany a spot in the knockout round regardless of what happens in the Austria-United States game. While an overtime win for the United States would bring themselves level with Austria and Germany on points, Germany would have the edge in a three-way tiebreaker via head-to-head goal difference (Germany has a +3 goal difference against the United States and Austria, while an overtime win for the United States would give them a +2 goal difference and Austria a -1 goal difference).

Any scenario in which Latvia earns a point, combined with any Austria win over the United States or a regulation result in that same game, would eliminate Germany from knockout-round contention. Even then, Germany did well to put themselves in position to qualify for the knockout round.

Germany vs Great Britain recap

While it took the Germans some time to get going with regard to the scoresheet, they would carry a lead into the first intermission.

Schwenninger Wild Wings forward Alexander Karachun gave Germany a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the first period, with the goal acting as his first of the tournament. The lone assist on the goal was provided by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider.

With just over 30 seconds left in the opening period, Eisbären Berlin winger Frederik Tiffels added his third goal of the tournament; no assists were recorded on the goal. 17 seconds later, EHC Munchen defenseman Fabio Wagner recorded his first goal at the 2026 World Championship; Karachun added a primary assist, while Seider recorded the secondary assist.

Just two minutes into the second period, Eisbären Berlin forward Andreas Eder scored his first goal of the tournament. Straubing Tigers forward Stefan Loibl and Adler Mannheim defenseman Leon Gawanke recorded their respective third assists of the tournament on the goal.

Great Britain added their first goal of the game four minutes into the middle frame, with Sheffield Steelers winger Robert Dowd recording the goal on the power play. The score acted as Dowd's final goal and, by extension, his final point at the international level; him and goaltender Ben Bowns previously announced their intention to retire from the national team following the conclusion of the tournament. Dowd's final international goal was assisted by Glasgow Clan forward Cade Neilson and HK Olimpija Ljubljana defenseman Nathanael Halbert.

17 seconds into the third period, Edmonton Oilers forward Josh Samanski recorded his second goal of the tournament to restore Germany's four goal lead. Boston Bruins winger Lukas Reichel added his fourth assist of the tournament, while Tiffels added his sixth assist. Gawanke added Germany's sixth goal of the game with nine minutes gone in the third period, with ERC Ingolstadt defenseman Leon Huttl and Fischtown Pinguins winger Nicolas Krammer recording their second assists of the 2026 World Championship.

Nottingham Panthers winger Ollie Betteridge brought Great Britain back within four goals after scoring his first of the tournament off an assist from Manchester Storm defenseman Brad Jenion, while Glasgow forward Robert Lachowicz briefly ignited hopes of a stunning comeback with six minutes left in regulation. Lachowicz's goal was assisted by Briançon forward Logan Neilson and Dundee Stars forward Johnny Curran.
