Former Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell took to Instagram to announce his retirement from professional hockey this weekend.

Campbell, 34, was originally drafted 11th overall at the 2010 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars and at the time was seen as the next star goaltender in the NHL and the hockey world as a whole. He had been a dominant player internationally for USA, capturing back-to-back U-18 gold medals in 2009 and 2010, also helping capture gold at the 2010 World Junior Championships.
In addition to his team performance, Campbell captured the U-18s best goaltender honours and tournament MVP. Along with his international resume, his domestic work as the starting goalie for the United States National Team Development Program was equally impressive.
Despite his accolades and pedigree, his performance at the NHL level did not amount to the billing of a selection so high. Despite this, given he was seen as a bust at one point but was able to persevere and play 176 career games at the NHL level is impressive.
Campbell did not live up to his Juniors hype
After his performances representing USA on the international stage, the expectations for Campbell were lofty and it is safe to say that he did not really live up to them. He was unable to breakthrough in Dallas, with the team that drafted him playing just one NHL game with the club that drafted him. However, he had a good run with the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs, finishing his tenures with .918 and .916 save percentages respectively.
This play earned him a five-year $25 million contract with the Oilers in the summer of 2022. The signing quickly blew up in both parties' faces with Campbell finishing his first year with a 21-9-4 record and a 3.41 goals against average and .884 save percentage. He lost the crease to young goalie Stuart Skinner and after just 41 games in an Oilers uniform in his contract was bought out by the Oilers in June 2024.
He hangs up his skates with a 93-52-18 record with a 2.76 goals against average and .906 save percentage playing with the Stars, Kings, Maple Leafs, and Oilers. He also played a combined 249 American Hockey League games, with a 122-89-30 record and a 2.73 GAA and .910 save percentage.
Campbell retires now with his instagram bio referring to himself as a "Former NHL Goaltender" and an "Identity & Performance Coach".
