The Edmonton Oilers aren't having the most ideal start to their 2025-26 season, that can be admitted. The scoring just isn't there, but Oilers fans can take solace in the fact that there is still a ton of season to go around. Plus, it could be much worse — they could be dealing with what the rival Calgary Flames are enduring currently..

The Flames last won a game back in their season-opener against, ironically, the Oilers. Since then, the Flames have lost their next seven games. In that stretch, the Flames have scored just nine goals.

On Wednesday, the Flames lost 2-1 to the Montreal Canadiens in overtime. After the game, goalie Dustin Wolf was asked about the team's scoring slump and being unable to put pucks in the back of the net. Wolf says he's doing his job, and stresses that he "can't generate offense."

Flames goalie calling out team is music to Oilers fans' ears

As the Bleacher Report tweet mentions above, the Flames are only averaging just 1.5 goals per game, which ranks dead-last in the entire NHL. There is a three-way tie for most goals scored between Rasmus Andersson, Matt Coronato, and Blake Coleman with two each. Morgan Frost, Jonathan Huberdeau, Matvei Gridin, Connor Zary, and Mikael Backlund have one goal each. Everyone else on the roster has zero goals.

You are not going to win games if you average just over one goal a game. You are essentially banking on your goalie to put forth a shutout on a nightly basis. That just isn't feasible or sustainable. Wolf can only do so much for the Flames, which is why he outright said that he needs the offense to step up.

Through seven games, Wolf has a 3.61 goals allowed average, a .875 save percentage, and a 1-5-1 record.

The Oilers can poke fun at their Alberta rivals, but they are just a little better in terms of goals per game. Edmonton has a 2.57 goals average, which ranks as the sixth-lowest in hockey. It's a way better average than the Flames, that's for sure. But the Oilers have the talent to really take the league by storm as the season progresses. After all, they do have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, both of whom are Hart Trophy winners.

The Oilers may have lost that opening game to the Flames, but they are in better shape since then. Calgary has been a downright disaster. Bad enough that the goalie has to call out his own team to provide him with more goals support.
