The Edmonton Oilers officially punched their ticket to the 2025 NHL playoffs with a 4-2 over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night at Rogers Place. With the win, the Oilers get a big monkey off their backs.

Now, it wasn’t as if there was any doubt the Oilers would clinch. It was just a matter of getting that first step out of the way. Now that clinching a playoff sport is behind them, the team can focus on getting healthy in time for Game 1 of the 2025 NHL playoffs.

Evan Bouchard (PPG), Ty Emberson, Corey Perry (PPG), and Connor Brown (EN) found the back of the net. Meanwhile, Calvin Pickard made 22 saves to backstop the Oilers to their 46th win of the season.

With the win, the Edmonton Oilers also locked up third place in the Pacific Division, as they now have a seven-point lead over the Calgary Flames with three games to play. As such, the Flames can no longer catch the Oilers for third.

The Flames remain alive as they are three points behind the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues for the final two wild card spots in the Western Conference.

As it stands, the Oilers are getting set for a first-round showdown with the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers are two points behind the Kings for second place in the Pacific. So, home-ice advantage in the first round is still very much in play.

Edmonton Oilers veteran praises Connor McDavid

Following the game, Oilers veteran Corey Perry spoke to the media. During his availability, Perry praised Connor McDavid for his impact on the ice. Perry stated: “He’s the best player in the world for a reason. He’s come in and he’s looked like Connor McDavid.”

Perry, who scored the game-winner on Friday night with his 17th of the season, said the quiet part out loud. McDavid is back from injury and looks like his old self. If that’s indeed the case, it spells bad news for the rest of the league as McDavid is a game-changer when he’s on the ice.

Last postseason, McDavid carried the Edmonton Oilers on his back, leading them to within one goal of the Stanley Cup. This postseason, McDavid will be looking to achieve something he’s never done before: Win a Stanley Cup. For all of the personal greatness, a Stanley Cup is the only thing missing from what has been an otherwise stellar resume.

The Edmonton Oilers have three games left on their schedule and will be looking to fine-tune their lineup before hitting the ice for Game 1 of the 2025 NHL playoffs.
