Oilers looking to bring Russian Maxim Berezkin over to North America
Originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 draft for the Oilers, Berezkin just broke out in the KHL with 15-27-42 in 66 games for Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of the KHL with a +19 to boot - all career highs for the 23 year old. Another thing Berezkin already has going for him is he already brings size to the table at 6' 4" and 211 lbs. That's a big dude already; most players his age still need to work into their NHL ready body, but MB is ready now. Another winner from the Holland era, I can't wait to see how he does for Bakersfield next season. Another great point in his favor is he can play both wings, and you always love to have a guy with versatility on the roster.
Oilers looking to sign Quinn Hutson to a two year ELC
I know what you're thinking, and yes, this is actually Lane Hutson's older brother. Hard to believe nobody signed him last season after he put up almost a point per game at Boston University in the US college ranks, following that up with 23-27-50 in 38 games and a +17 to boot, all career highs for the young RWer.
So far, so good, but we shouldn't assume that we've unearthed another Lane Hutson just because they share a bloodline. After all, for every Sutter brother, Statsny brother, Strome brother, and Tkachuk brother, there's a Paul Comrie, Keith Gretzky, and Paul Messier, all of whom had significantly diminished careers next to their more well known brothers. Imagine the head game that would play with your mind....
At any rate, it's so far so good on the elder Hutson. If he does end up making the Oilers at some point, look for games against the Habs to be very entertaining. Maybe the two brothers will even fight each other at some point.....
One thing about Hutson that's curious - they're actually looking to bring him in straight away to the Oilers which would burn a year off his ELC. He better be ready for prime time if that's the case, otherwise that's very foolish roster management.
