On a day filled with player movement across the National Hockey League, the Edmonton Oilers biggest move was a subtraction rather than an addition. Moving out Darnell Nurse, as per the player’s trade request, gives the Oilers the opportunity to tweak their roster over the summer and the regular 2026-27 season, and potentially find their way back to the Stanley Cup Final.

it should be noted that Nurse was a great Oiler almost 800 games. From his rookie year to the past season, Nurse filled a vital role. He provided a level of offense, stood toe-to-toe with anyone in the league, and outperformed every contract save for his current one. The departure leaves a gap in Edmonton’s roster, and general manager Stan Bowman will be hard pressed to fill it at a lower dollar figure.

The move is a win because there's no retention

While Oiler fans would have liked the trade to happen earlier in the day, potentially clearing the way for a splash during the initial hours of free agency, the real positive is the fact that the San Jose Sharks to Nurse along with his entire cap hit. It was the one thing Bowman had to avoid, and the success there negates the fact that the Oilers got almost nothing else in return. It's a clear slate, and with the added cap space, they can go out and find pieces that fit better from a cost point of view.

Connor Murphy has a good shot at filling many of Nurse's duties, but the Oilers are going to want to replace his offense somehow. The great news is, cap room may mean help arrives at a different position, either a winger or at center. The Oilers now have an opportunity to build a more balanced roster, and while other contracts like Jake Walman's will need to turn out as good bets, the flexibility is something few Oilers GMs have possessed.

No one should blame Nurse for the trade demand. He saw the writing on the wall at the last deadline, and his specific contract clauses meant he had far more control over his destination now than he would have had if he waited until Bowman was ready to move him. All the best Darnell, you were a part of some of the best Oiler teams this millennium and you're headed to a team on the rise. Hopefully the Sharks won't surpass the Oilers in the next couple years, but they're a team that looks loaded for the future.
