The Edmonton Oilers remain at the top of the Pacific Division, but one glaring question continues to loom over their Stanley Cup aspirations—goaltending. While Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have had decent stretches, inconsistencies throughout the season have raised concerns about whether Edmonton has a reliable tandem for a deep playoff run.
With the NHL trade deadline approaching, Oilers general manager Stan Bowman may look to reinforce the position. According to Daily Hive Sports, multiple goaltenders have been linked to Edmonton as potential trade targets. Here is a breakdown of the most notable names being discussed.
1 - Karel Vejmelka (Utah Hockey Club)
Karel Vejmelka has been a bright spot for Utah, despite the challenges of a franchise that was relocated from Arizona less than a year ago. The 28-year-old Czech goaltender is in the final year of his contract, carrying a $2.75 million cap hit, which could be reduced if Utah retains salary.
Vejmelka has time and again proved the ability to handle a heavy workload and could provide much-needed stability as a 1B option alongside Skinner. The cost to acquire him is expected to be reasonable—potentially a third- or fourth-round draft pick. Given the Oilers' need for consistency in net, he is a viable trade candidate.
2 - John Gibson (Anaheim Ducks)
A long-speculated trade candidate, John Gibson has been seeking a fresh start outside of Anaheim. The veteran goaltender has carried a significant workload for the rebuilding Ducks and has been linked to playoff-contending teams in recent seasons.
At his best, Gibson is capable of elite performances, but his contract—carrying a $6.4 million annual cap hit through 2026-27—could make a deal challenging unless salary retention is involved. Gibson has the talent, the experience, and the battle scars from carrying a rebuilding Ducks squad for years. The question is: Will the Oilers pull the trigger and give Skinner a much-needed true partner in crime?
3 - Alex Nedeljkovic (Pittsburgh Penguins)
At one point, Alex Nedeljkovic was seen as a future NHL starter. Then things went sideways. Now with Pittsburgh, he has posted a .899 save percentage this season, but some believe a move to a contending team with a stronger defensive structure could help him regain form. It’s a gamble, but if the price is right, Nedeljkovic might just be worth rolling the dice on.
4 - James Reimer (Buffalo Sabres)
James Reimer has been one of the league’s most well-traveled goaltenders, providing reliable depth for multiple teams over the years. Currently with Buffalo, Reimer could be an affordable option if the Oilers prioritize experience and stability over a high-risk, high-reward acquisition.
Would Reimer be a game-changer? Not really. But if you’re looking for a reliable veteran to help eat up some minutes and let Skinner breathe, he’s not a bad choice.
5 - Jonathan Quick (New York Rangers)
A proven winner, Jonathan Quick has multiple Stanley Cups to his name and a reputation for delivering in high-pressure situations. Currently with the New York Rangers, Quick has performed well this season and could be a trade target if the Rangers decide to move assets at the deadline.
At 38 years old, Quick would not be a long-term solution, but his experience and playoff pedigree could provide invaluable depth for Edmonton as they look to make a deep postseason run.
The Oilers have options. Vejmelka and Gibson could be strong tandem partners for Skinner, while Quick brings experience and clutch factor. Reimer and Nedeljkovic? Solid depth options if Bowman just wants insurance.
At this point, it’s all up to Oilers management. With the trade deadline fast approaching, all eyes will be on Bowman to see whether he makes a move to power up Edmonton’s crease in their pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
