The Edmonton Oilers won their first game in what seems like forever last night. Their last win before this one was the Heritage Classic when they beat the Calgary Flames in the outdoor spectacle.

The 4-1 against the Seattle Kraken is a step in the right direction, but they need to play more consistently moving forward. The management thought the same as even though they won the game they still relieved Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson of their coaching duties.

A little bit of me wonders if the team knew about the upcoming coaching change because of the way they played last night. Now that is pretty far down the conspiracy theory route, but the way the Oilers played last night compared to the way they played in San Jose, something changed.

The Edmonton Oilers Need To Rack Up Wins

There is no more room for moral victories for this team. This team is in dire need of points in the standings. It is barely a month into the season and the Oilers are already 8 points from the final wildcard spot.

The points themself aren’t so bad it is the number of other teams in between. There are a total of 6 teams that the Oilers need to leapfrog to get back into a playoff spot. Do I think the Edmonton Oilers have the ability to do it? Yes, I do.

The problem is I also thought the Oilers would be in a fight for the top team in the NHL this season. They have let me down numerous times this season. I am now at the point where they need to show me. No more looking at potential.

Jay Woodcroft’s Firing Was Circumstantial

The worst part for the Edmonton Oilers is I believe they fired a really good coach today. I do think it was a necessary evil to shake this team up as they were playing so poorly though. If the Edmonton Oilers would have beat the Sharks I think Woodcroft would still have a job.

As I wrote earlier the team had to beat Sharks or something major was going to happen. I think as soon as they lost that game the choice to fire Woody was made. They just wanted to do the firing back in Edmonton versus on the road.

The problem with that is it now looks strange to have fired your coach after one of the team’s best efforts of the whole year. The team now brings in Kris Knoblauch to try and turn this team around. Will he make a difference, I sure hope so.

No matter what happened behind the bench the players ultimately are the ones that play the game. There is no doubt that most of this team needs to be better. I don’t know if the coaching change will be the cause, but I am expecting the Edmonton Oilers to start a winning streak starting very soon.
