The Edmonton Oilers have had a rocky start to the NHL season, with a record of 1-3-0 in their first 4 games. One player who has been underperforming is Evander Kane. Kane has just 1 point in the 4 games and has been a liability on the ice with his -5 +/-. If the Oilers want to turn their season around, they need Kane to step up and be a better player.

I wrote in my 3 keys to victory in last night’s game, that if Evander Kane had a solid game then there was a much better chance that the Edmonton Oilers would win. That obviously did not happen.

Kane has always been a talented player, with a career-high 30 goals in the 2011-2012 and 2018-2019 seasons. He has also proven himself in the past with the Edmonton Oilers, but so far this season he has struggled to produce.

The main concern with Kane’s play has been his lack of offensive production. He has just 1 assist, which is not good enough for a player of his calibre. The Oilers need Kane to be a consistent scorer if they want to turn this season around. He has shown in the past that he can score goals, but he needs to start doing it on a regular basis for the Oilers.

The leash for Evander Kane hopefully has been shortened. He plays a majority of his minutes with the best player in the world. His having only 1 assist playing with McDavid and Draisaitl is not going to be allowed long-term. Don’t be surprised if he is moved off that line if the struggles continue.

Kane also needs to be better defensively. He has been a liability in his own zone, often getting caught out of position or making bad decisions with the puck. This has led to several goals against the Oilers, which is unacceptable for a player who is supposed to be a top-six forward. If Kane is not going to provide offence, he has to at least provide stability defensively, being a -5 shows us he is not doing that.

In conclusion, Evander Kane needs to be better for the Edmonton Oilers. He has not lived up to expectations so far this season, and the team needs him to step up and be a better player. Kane needs to score more goals and be better defensively if he wants to help the team. The Edmonton Oilers have a talented roster, but they need all their players to be performing at their best if they want to be successful. Kane can potentially be a game-changer for the Oilers, but he needs to start showing it on the ice.
