Only drafted just over three months ago, Beau Akey is already making a name for himself within the Edmonton Oilers organization.
On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers confirmed they have signed Beau Akey to a three-year entry level contract. This marks the next step, in what has already been rapid rise to recognition within the organization.
Akey was the top selection for the Oilers in this year’s draft, selected 56th overall, in the second round. Ahead of the draft he was ranked as high as 32nd, by Elite Prospects.
The 18-year-old impressed during training camp, particularly during the Young Stars Classic. He was rewarded with a preseason appearance, before returning to the Barrie Colts.
Akey discussed how grateful he was for the opportunity to play in a preseason game. Speaking to the media, including the Edmonton Oilers official YouTube channel, he said:
"“I definitely tried my hardest out there, it’s about what I could do out there. I’m thankful enough that the coaches played me. All the guys have been so kind to me, welcoming me into this team.”"
The Waterloo, Ontario native also discussed stepping up a level and playing against NHL-quality opponents. He said:
"“It’s definitely a different mindset. You go from junior, and then you’re going against real NHL players. It’s definitely a chance of pace and you’re always thinking ‘you’ve got to be good this shift against those guys’.”"

Akey is an attacking defenceman who’s better at the offensive end of the ice. He’s an excellent skater, with excellent composure and skill when handling the puck.
The blue-liner’s contract has cap hit of $895,000 including bonuses. However, the deal cannot kick in until next season at the earliest, due to him already returning to the OHL with the Colts.
Last season, Akey had 47 points (11 goals and 36 assists) in 66 games for the Colts. So far this season, he has three points (one goal and two assists) in four games.
As things stand, the right-shot defenceman is projected to be NHL-ready for the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Regardless, he’s already off to a promising start within the Oilers organization.
