Lack Of Discipline Was The Reason For Edmonton Oilers Loss

The Edmonton Oilers started this game just like they would have wanted to. They scored a goal early in the game and added a powerplay goal before the end of the first period. The game started to get away from them in the second period though.

The Oilers took their foot off the gas and let the Los Angeles Kings get a lot of momentum. The Oilers took 3 straight minor penalties in the second period. That took the Oilers out of their rhythm.

These powerplays gave the Kings a glimmer of hope. Even if you don’t score on a powerplay it can get your skilled players in the game. They used the powerplay opportunities to get a good feel for the puck and gave the Kings confidence.

The extra time on the powerplay for the Kings caught up with the Edmonton Oilers late in the game as the Kings scored the game tieing goal with 17 seconds left as well as the overtime winner on the man advantage.

As I mentioned in the pregame article when the Edmonton Oilers lost to the Los Angeles Kings, the Kings didn’t beat the Oilers, the Oilers beat themselves. That is what happened again last night. The Oilers were clearly the better team, they just took their foot off the pedal and took too many penalties.

I would expect the Edmonton Oilers to come back out on Wednesday and have these issues rectified. This team has shown to have a short memory and the ability to bounce back after a tough loss. If the Oilers have the same type of start as they did last night they will not make the same mistakes.
