In the Journal a few days ago it was reported that Derek Ryan is the Oilers nominee for the Masterton Trophy.
I have no objection to Ryan as a player but I’m questioning how Ryan fits the definition of what the Masterton Trophy is awarded for.
I would’ve assumed that Evander Kane – who overcame two major injuries this season and has now returned to peak form – would be a much better nominee. Another good choice would’ve been Vincent Desharnais, a seventh-round draft pick who accomplished what few seventh-rounders do – win a regular spot on an NHL roster, especially on your first callup.
Ryan just seems to be a player who is a good guy and that’s why he was nominated. Good luck to him, but I would’ve nominated Kane or Desharnais. Oh well, no one said the PWHA know what they are doing…..
Ex-Oilers Forward Interview
Ex-Oiler Jordan Eberle did an interview with Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman here, and he spoke a little bit about his time with the Oilers, and like most NHL players being interviewed he had nothing but good things to say – brought up an interesting story about a run-in that Taylor Hall and Nikolai Khabibulin had with each other.
Interestingly enough, he said that the dressing room in Long Island with the Islanders was the closest-knit team he’s ever been on.
It’s a good listen if want to hear it.
