Minnesota Wild

This might come as a surprise as currently, the Minnesota Wild is sitting at the third playoff spot in the Central Division with 52 points. The Wild might be reluctant to swing a deal for any of their position players with their current success, however, if the tide shifts in the other direction for this team, they might have a different tone in that regard.

If the Wild is still holding on to a playoff spot before the deadline, their asking price from teams will be a lateral move instead of draft picks. The Edmonton Oilers were one of the reported teams that are checking in on the Wild’s defenseman Matt Dumba.

There is no question, that the Oilers are in need of a defenseman that can help lower the massive minutes Darnell Nurse has been playing. Getting Matt Dumba, and his experience not only solves that issue for the Oilers but also get the team an opportunity to ship out Puljujarvi. Of course, this will be a tricky trade for both Edmonton and Minnesota to make, as both teams are up against the cap. A trade for Dumba might look like this:

Again, with Matt Dumba making $6 million this year, the Oilers will need to ship away a similar contract to Minnesota to even make this deal close to happening. By trading Puljujarvi $3 million, and Barrie $4.5 million, the money will be close to offsetting. As I said earlier, it will take some maneuvering from Holland to prevent any impact deals from happening.

It will be hard-pressed to see the Oilers trade Barrie as he is playing well this season, however, if the Wild are in playoff contention, they will surely ask for a replacement for Dumba. Getting Dumba will immensely help the defensive dynamic of the Edmonton Oilers defence, whilst also lessening the worry of the cap, as Dumba’s contract is set to expire after this season, a luxury the Oilers do have.
